The Navy

Career

Qualifications

For commissioned officers, at least a Bachelor's Degree, some technical training, advanced leadership training for those progressing into higher leadership roles. For enlisted, technical training and some advanced leadership training for those advancing to more senior grades and responsibilities.

Career Progression

Rising up through the ranks, whether it's enlisted or officer ranks. One does not have to reach the pinnacle of their career to be a leader. In face, many who leave the Navy go on to become leaders in other aspects.

Payment & Reimbursement

Professionals are paid, but they also have the balance of their life riding on their job, so it's up to the individual to determine if they are getting fair value.

Other Benefits

Housing, food, and uniforms (clothing) are the generally provided benefits of service in the Navy. For those who excel, different accoutrements (medals, ribbons, fourrageres) are provided to show recognition for various deeds and positions.

Perception

Purpose

The Navy is the protector of worlds. They are the first line of defense (the ground troops being the second) when systems are invaded.

Social Status

In most areas, a career or service in the Navy is considered a good thing. There are areas where the infighting between surface and space borne services may take a different turn and Naval service is considered a "lower" occupation.

Demographics

Generally, between 1 and 3 percent of the population, depending on how much risk there is to adversity. In places where war is raging, this number could increase to 25 percent. Anything above that starts depleting the ability to support the forces engaged in direct action.

History

The Navy has been at the forefront of research and development, with many results being made available to non-military crews and ships with minor alterations to protect the military's superiority.

Operations

Tools

The basic tool of the Navy remains the individual sailor. In terms of mechanical, non-human equipment, the space ship would be considered the basic tool.

Workplace

In a relatively small space surrounded by the vacuum of the universe, men and women of the Navy continue to protect the citizens they are responsible for. The ship might be new, with that "new ship" smell, or it could be a well worn ship that continues to provide service with sounds that weren't intended and the smell of human fear and sweat.

Dangers & Hazards

They work in a tiny tin can surrounded by vacuum. Any more questions?
