Veil of Varaan

Nestled in a secluded region of Läeril, near the border with Teorcas, lies a place steeped in mystery and reverence: the Veil of Varaan. This expansive marshland is known not only for its treacherous terrain and unique ecosystem but also for the enigmatic phenomenon known as Retroact Rain, which has cemented its reputation as a place where the dying go to transcend the boundaries of life and death.

Geography

The Veil of Varaan stretches across a vast area, characterized by its labyrinthine network of slow-moving streams, pools, and boggy expanses. The terrain is uneven, with patches of solid ground interspersed with deep, murky waters. The marsh transitions from dense, forested areas on its periphery to open wetlands in the center. The outer edges are marked by thick canopies of ancient trees, while the central wetlands are dominated by tall grasses and scattered groves.   Within this mystical landscape are numerous water features that add to the Veil’s allure. Small ponds, known as Luminous Ponds, dot the terrain, their waters shimmering with bioluminescent algae. These ponds are central to local folklore and are considered sacred by nearby inhabitants. The Whispering Streams crisscross the marsh, their crystal-clear waters producing a gentle, whispering sound that enhances the mystical atmosphere.   Among the notable landmarks are the Shimmering Grove, a cluster of ancient trees with bioluminescent bark and leaves that glow faintly during the Retroact Rain, and the Weeping Stones, ancient moss-covered rocks that appear to "weep" during the rain, their surfaces glistening with moisture that seems to flow upwards.

Ecosystem

The Veil of Varaan boasts a rich and diverse ecosystem. Among its unique flora are Glowroot Trees, large trees with bioluminescent roots that provide light in the dense fog and dark waters. Dream Lilies, flowers that bloom only during the Retroact Rain, are known for their hallucinogenic pollen, which heightens the visions experienced during the event. Ebon Willows, with their dark, drooping branches, create natural curtains of foliage, adding to the area's secrecy and mystery.   The fauna of Varaan is equally intriguing. Spectral Eels, transparent and faintly glowing, are visible in the waterways during the Retroact Rain and are considered omens of peace, guiding the spirits of the dead. Ghost Herons, large ethereal birds, appear and disappear mysteriously, believed to be messengers between the living and the dead. Flicker Frogs, small amphibians that flicker in and out of sight, contribute to the surreal environment with their croaking, said to mimic the voices of the departed.

Localized Phenomena

The Retroact Rain is the most defining feature of the Veil of Varaan, a phenomenon occurring in three distinct phases. During the first phase, heavy rain falls, saturating the marshlands. This deluge lasts for about 15 to 30 minutes. Abruptly, the rain enters the second phase, freezing in mid-air and creating an eerie stillness that pervades the marsh for around 10 to 20 minutes. Finally, in the third phase, the frozen raindrops start to rise back into the sky, reversing their descent in a surreal display lasting another 15 to 30 minutes.   Those caught in the Retroact Rain experience vivid hallucinations related to their past and the history of Varaan. These visions often feel intensely real, blurring the line between reality and illusion. Inhabitants of nearby settlements like Eldreth view these hallucinations as spiritual visitations, believing them to be their ancestors or loved ones coming to guide the dying to the afterlife.

Natural Resources

The Veil of Varaan is home to several valuable natural resources. Bioluminescent algae, harvested from the Luminous Ponds, are used by nearby settlements for light sources and in various rituals. The marsh also houses rare medicinal herbs with potent healing properties, highly sought after by alchemists and healers. Dream Lily pollen, highly valuable for its hallucinogenic properties, is used in religious ceremonies and by those seeking spiritual visions.

History

The Veil of Varaan has a long and storied history, stretching back millennia. Legends tell of an ancient civilization that once thrived here, using the unique properties of the marsh to commune with the spirit world. The phenomenon of Retroact Rain has been documented for thousands of years, believed to mark the beginning of Varaan's reputation as a place where the veil between life and death is thinnest.   Over the centuries, the Veil of Varaan has become a central part of the local culture. The inhabitants of nearby settlements like Eldreth hold the area in high regard, seeing it as a sacred site where the living can connect with their ancestors. Death rituals involve bringing the dying to Varaan during the Retroact Rain, believing that the hallucinations are their ancestors or loved ones coming to guide them to the afterlife. Some even undertake spiritual pilgrimages to the Veil, seeking redemption or answers through experiencing the Retroact Rain.   The history of Varaan is also marked by conflict and mystery. Various factions have sought control over the area due to its unique resources and spiritual significance. There are tales of explorers who ventured too deep into the marsh, never to return, and of treasures hidden within its depths. Today, the Veil of Varaan is guarded by a group known as the Wardens of the Veil, who protect the marsh from exploitation and ensure that its rituals and traditions are respected and preserved.
