Lumino Otters
The otters are known as the messengers of the deep. They travel back and forth between Caraballa and the Killing Reefs, serving as a means of communication for all creatures of the Veil. These otters hold a special place in the hearts of Veil dwellers and are considered holy. To distinguish themselves as royal message carriers, they wear teal sashes
They maintain numerous posts throughout the Veil, ensuring they can locate anyone in need, no matter how remote. Lumino Otters are devoted to their duty, carrying out their purpose with unwavering loyalty. Remarkably, they are among the very few species unaffected by Umbral Water, a deadly substance that kills nearly all who come into contact with it. Some speculate that this resilience is due to their unique fur and physiological adaptations, which protect them from the water’s lethal effects.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Lumino Otters have long, slender bodies and relatively short limbs, optimized for agility and speed in the water. Their powerful webbed feet allow them to maneuver with remarkable precision, while their long, muscular tails provide balance and propulsion, enabling effortless navigation through the Veil’s complex underwater terrain. Most have sharp claws for gripping surfaces or prey, enhancing their dexterity both in and out of the water.
One of their most extraordinary abilities is their seal-like breath control. Lumino Otters can hold their breath for up to four hours, allowing them to dive to the deepest reaches of the Sea of the Veil multiple times without surfacing. This remarkable adaptation, combined with their streamlined bodies and powerful swimming skills, makes them unparalleled messengers and explorers of the underwater realm.
In addition, they possess keen eyesight for navigating dimly lit waters and a heightened sense of smell to detect creatures, messages, or dangers from afar. These physical and sensory adaptations ensure that Lumino Otters can perform their sacred duties with unmatched precision and reliability.
Ecology and Habitats
Lumino Otters dwell in dense clusters of kelp-like forests scattered throughout the Sea of the Veil. They are often seen perched on shiny rocks, carrying small prey such as Spinesnappers or Needlecushions, which they skillfully open and consume. These otters are considered keystone species, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the underwater ecosystem. By controlling populations of smaller creatures, they prevent overpopulation, helping to preserve the health of kelp forests and reef systems alike.
While most Lumino Otters reside in the kelp forests, small family clusters can also be found living on reefs. These reef-dwelling groups tend to be more territorial but share many of the same behaviors and duties as their forest-dwelling counterparts. Their presence ensures that the delicate balance of the Sea of the Veil remains intact, supporting a diverse array of aquatic life.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Lumino Otters primarily feed on Spinesnappers and Needlecushions, which they skillfully open to consume. They also hunt small fish, crabs, and other creatures they find among the kelp forests. In addition, Lumino Otters have been known to accept a variety of snacks from Aquarrii and humans, as their duties as messengers make them frequent world travelers.
Socially, Lumino Otters are often observed in pairs during dives and long trips. While it is not yet fully understood whether they mate for life, they form strong bonds with one another. Pairs sleep holding hands, often drifting together in small groups for safety and warmth. These close social structures enhance their coordination during travel and hunting, ensuring both survival and the successful completion of their messenger duties.
