Orbital Rings
Extensions of a planet rising hundreds of kilometers into the sky, Orbital Rings are one of the most telling points of a planet's technological status, wealth, and importance. Ranging from small in-atmosphere overhangs to massive complexes nearly the size of the planet itself, the utility of Orbital Rings cannot be understated.
Utility
Orbital Rings can hold anything you can do planet-side, and are often large enough to simply act as an extension of the planet itself, with its own sections of suburbs, transportation, commercial zones, and obscenely wealthy areas. Some Orbital rings may have ship-launch platforms to accelerate or de-accelerate ships to allow for orbital-speed transfer, as Orbital Rings do not actually orbit, and thus travel at the rotational speed of the planet instead of orbital velocity.
Social Impact
Planets with Orbital Rings often show greater disparages of wealth inequality, as the ring's size along the planet often create massive sun-less zones on the surface. The sheer size and density of the connecting Planetary Archologies often cause bureaucratic failures in lesser Factions, causing rampant corporatism, enforcement misconduct, tribalism, and millions of undocumented individuals living within their own societies within.
Access & Availability
Very few planets - in comparison to how many inhabited planets exist - have orbital rings. The amount of resources to construct them alone is more than most planetary bureaucracy can handle without assistance of its overseeing body.
