FTL Com-Buoys
Due to the major downside of FTL Travel being the disconnection of quantum-linked communication devices, the galaxy at large had to come up with a way to fix these issues, and what is better than just a rod floating in space, filled with quantum conductors.
Utility
FTL Com Buoys serve two major purposes:
1. When within around one tenth of a light year of an FTL Com Buoy, the station will automatically reconnect all quantum communication devices present that have been disconnected due to entering Hyperspace.
2. With a highly precise GPS system, these stations act simply as FTL Buoys as well, capable of assisting in FTL course calculations by either acting as a "safe zone" to warp to, or simply be used to orient the craft given its position versus multiple buoys.
Manufacturing
Constructing FTL Com Buoys is expensive, but not likely for the reason one may think. While Quantum Conductors are extremely costly, the most expensive part of the stations are actually the solar panels. These panels have to operate for potentially hundreds of years and, in worst case scenarios, deal with micro-impacts. Due to these challenges, buoys often come equipped with shielding, armor, and multiple backups and failsafes.
Social Impact
Almost all FTL jumps are made directly towards buoys, causing areas around these stations to be heavily populated in civilized areas, and the only signs of life in more deserted areas. Regardless of faction, these stations are protected fiercely due to their importance, with threats made against them taken extremely seriously. However, being hotspots of activity, it causes a pseudo-"lane" network to form from system to system, with a majority of warps being done from Buoy to Buoy. This can cause ambushes to be easily set up at these choke points. It is generally recommended that when warping from buoy to buoy away from safety and civilization, that you jump with your shields up and your armor plates locked.
All FTL Buoys contain backup RTG cells in the case of a failure of their solar panels, and 2 years worth of food in the form of Nutrient Sludge that, upon use, ping the Buoy for immediate maintenance.
Access & Availability
These buoys can be found in almost every single system in the galaxy, including uncolonized systems and even pirate-owned space. There is one rule among all of those within the galaxies, marauders, pirates, and terrorists included. You do not. Fuck. With the Buoys.
