SPOILERS FOR RECKLESS TRUTH
Mist was born as a test-tube experiment, grown from Evie Direheart's appropriated and frozen egg cells. As a baby he was given to a single father to be raised with his family, testing this new generation of supersoldiers in a natural environment to see how differently they develop. He spoke with his mother in secret, when they visited him during missions, and they taught him basic ways to control his powers.
When he was eight years old, the Controller returned to collect him, believing him to be the answer to whatever nefarious plan he has, but their efforts were interrupted by Elyan who would not allow another family's life to be broken this way. The boy was saved while his family was killed and he is now in the care of Evie and their honourary family but the Controller still actively seeks him, and his life is in as much danger as ever.
