Magick
What is magick? Not energy. Not living. It is like an incorporeal, transcendental form of potential. Existing between the layers of reality, magick is drawn toward sources of life by using planets as gateways, emerging from their core. It then flows throughout life-supporting planets almost like neural pathways and emerges where there is an outlet for its potential. It is neutral toward perceived notions of good and evil, being usable by all matter living and non-living with the capacity to convey it. Magick is not the spell itself but it assists in the binding together of energies and matter in a spell. That which is created from magick reverts back into magick when it expires.
History
As the planet of Tala'm was formed and magick began to circulate through it, concentrations of magick caused upheavals of the ground which formed a mighty mountain upon each large continental land mass. Within these mountains gestated enormous living beings connected to the planet and sustained by the supply of magick. After millions of years; once the planet had cooled, water had formed, and plant life had begun to prosper; the life-forms broke free from their mountain incubation and went forth to spread new life upon the planet. These life-forms became known as World Dragons.
"From the World Dragons' footsteps as they walked formed magickal forests and meadows.
From the World Dragons' mouths as they roared formed Lesser Dragons.
From the World Dragons' scales as they shed formed Caval.
From the World Dragons' tears as they wept formed Minor Dragons.
From the World Dragons' dreams as they slept once every hundred years formed Dragon Riders.
And monsters. Monsters of all manner of shape and form. Nightmares come to life, wreaking havoc upon all of Tala'm."
Excerpt from ancient text
Besides the World Dragons and their kin, magick seeped into some other flora and fauna species and enabled them to harness magick.
Manifestation
Magick is in the very air breathed in (some of which is residual, as an added dose of the invigorating aroma can still be smelled briefly after the casting of a spell).
Magick can be used in a variety of ways for an enormous array of effects. The Tala'man abilities and spells it helps enable manifest in a wide palette of colors. The meaning, if any, of the various colors has not yet been determined, although the colors do stay generally consistent no matter who is performing the action or where. The elements drawn from (solids, liquids, and gases), in addition to material components, may have some bearing on the coloration, although there are far too many exceptions for this to be a fully accepted conclusion.
Most any species of animal will have the occasional offspring with magickal potential, which magick seeks out and endows them with a higher intelligence, ability to learn and speak other languages, and to perform feats through the learned harnessing of magick. These are known as Magimals.
Some species of plants have defensive abilities owing to magick. Also, similar to Magimals, some plants appear to have intelligence and the ability to dodge and react aggressively when threatened or to alter color and turn toward insects for garnering attention during their pollination seasons.
Mushrooms grow much larger and in greater abundance where there are large concentrations of magick. In these areas, the air can also feel and smell permeated with magick.
Gems and other stones infused with magick have a tendency to be in brighter color hues.
