Mothman
The Portent of Tragedy
An ephemeral being shrouded in mystery that has managed to elude even the Organization. Wherever it appears, disaster occurs. Is it the cause or a warning?
Divine Domains
It has been sighted at various locations around the world, but theorized to not originate from the realm of human experience.
Divine Goals & Aspirations
The Mothman is one of the most enigmatic creatures in the annals of the supernatural. Due to the lack of direct communication or external sources, little to nothing is definitively known about it. Its behavior, origins, and purpose are all a complete mystery. Even the classification for what type of supernatural being it is has been made muddy by the abundance of various types of supernatural phenomena that accompany its presence. What can be inferred based on the correlations drawn between events, is that sightings of the Mothman signal an imminent disaster in the area. It is unknown what attracts the Mothman to these locations or even if it is the cause of the disasters. Some suggest the Mothman is attempting to warn humans in the area, citing that it has never attacked anyone. It appears to be apathetic towards humans attempting to physically interact with it. Instead observing from a distance.
Physical Description
Body Features
Despite what its name suggests, Mothman is in no way moth-like. In all of the 100 reported sightings, no one had ever gotten a clear view of the creature. But through consistencies in their testimonies, we can paint a general picture of its physical description. A seven-and-a-half-foot tall humanoid creature, sharing a number of characteristics with avians, greyish-brown in color, seeming to lack a discernable head, and with bird-like wings boasting a massive estimated span of 15 feet. When not in use, these wings stay tightly folded to the creature's sides. Giving it an ovoid silhouette that somewhat resembles those of roosting owls. What all witnesses distinctly remember about the Mothman are its two piercing red eyes that glow in the dark. Located in the chest area, each eye is estimated to be roughly the size of a baseball and appears to lack any discernible pupils.
Physical quirks
When it walks, it is said to move in a shuffling motion like a penguin. It rarely makes any noise. But when it does, it either emits small squeaks like a mouse or a horrible shriek that sounds like a train's emergency breaks being engaged.
When taking flight, Mothman is said to ascend straight up in a manner that many witnesses describe as an ascending angel, before leveling out. It is noted as rarely ever flapping its wings during flight and being eerily silent.
Special abilities
Those who encountered the Mothman describe the eyes as alluring and fill all who saw them with an overwhelming sense of dread and fear, that in some cases lasted for years afterward. Many witnesses who claim to have been in extended contact with the Mothman experienced frequent nightmares and dark premonitions. Some even suffered physical ailments such as swelling and redness of the eyes and strange marks on their skin that doctors likened to radiation burns.
Its presence causes disturbances in local electronics. If it stands near a TV, strange scenery will appear on the screen.

Personal history
On Nov 12, 1966, near Clendenin, West Virginia, five gravediggers spotted what they described as a man with wings taking flight and flying low over the trees. Three days later on Nov 15, the homeowner, Newell Partridge, noticed odd electronic disturbances on his T.V. before his trained hunting dog began barking at something outside. He stepped onto the porch and noticed two dots, shining a bright red like bicycle reflectors, from the tree line. His dog took off in the direction of the lights and was never seen again. That same night, outside the sleepy, little town of Point Pleasant, Two couples, Robert and Linda Scarberry, and Steve and Mary Mallette were enjoying a night cruise through what the locals referred to as "The TNT Area," because it had once been used to manufacture and house munitions during World War II. The area had long since been abandoned and reclaimed by nature. But many local teenagers saw it as a sort of lover's lane despite the local superstition that the area was haunted. Unfortunately, these two couples were about to find out just how haunted the area was when they noticed what they thought was a man standing by the side of the road. But when their headlights fell upon the thing, they realized that it was not a man at all, but a seven-foot-tall, humanoid creature with bird-like wings folded to its sides and glowing red eyes. Horrified, the couples sped off, only for the creature to suddenly leap into the air and begin to follow them, staying right above them even at speeds exceeding 100mph. It was so close to the car, that Linda Scarberry claimed she could see the muscles in its legs and when it flapped its wings, they folded around the sides of the car and slapped the bottom of the chassis. Only when the car started to get close to the downtown area, did the creature break off its pursuit. Shaken, the couples reported their encounter to the police. Locals began to call this mysterious creature simply “The Bird.”
These sightings were closely followed by 100 other sightings alongside other paranormal encounters in the region, including many reports of UFOs and Men in Black. Residents of Point Pleasent took up arms and drove out, almost nightly, into the TNT Area in search of the creature. They all returned empty-handed, but many came back to town horribly shaken after an encounter that was more than they had bargained for. The media soon caught wind of the story and gave this ghostly beast a name that still strikes fear in many residents of West Virginia. "Mothman."
These strange events came to a cataclysmic end on December 15th, 1967. That morning, Mothman was spotted perched atop the Silver Bridge spanning the Ohio River in Point Pleasant for half an hour before flying off. Then at 5 pm, while backed with rush hour traffic, the Silver Bridge suddenly collapsed. Sending 46 people plunging to an icy end in the river below. As of this day, sightings of the Mothman and other related phenomena suddenly ceased in the area. By the time Organization agents arrived on the scene, they found no trace of the creature.
In 1974, workers at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine came to their superiors with reports of a headless, winged, red-eyed man seen flying above the nuclear reactors at night. Sightings of this creature became so prevalent that the locals soon gave the creature a name; “The Black Bird.” Noting similarities to the Point Plesant Mothman, Organization agents were dispatched as soon as the reports were confirmed, but once again failed to contain the creature. Though they were able to record it on film.
1978, Freiburg Germany. Fifty mine workers reported a black, bird-like man with glowing red eyes blocking the entrance into the mine. The creature created a horrid screech described as sounding like "The sound of a train's emergency brakes mixed with the shouts of sixty men" that scared the men off. An hour later, the mine collapsed. This became known as the Freiburg Shrieker.
August 1, 2007, Minneapolis. A winged man was reported seen flying about in the days leading up to the collapse of the I-35 Bridge.
La Junta, Mexico 2009. Police following reports from farmers of a winged creature terrorizing locals came upon what they thought was a man leaning against a tree at night. When approached, the man suddenly spread wings and took flight. Leaving the officers frozen in terror. This was followed shortly by an epidemic of Swine Flu.
Fukushima, Japan, 2011. Multiple witnesses report a man-sized bird with red eyes that filled them with fear in the days leading up to the earthquake, tsunami, and resulting nuclear disaster.
2017-2019, Chicago, Illinois. Multiple reports of a winged humanoid matching the description of Mothman made headlines as sightings came in from the Windy City. Murder rates increased to an all-time high. Sightings stopped in February 2019. When a polar vortex engulfed the city in an icy death grip. 21 people froze to death.
On the night of August 19, 2019, the Mothman was spotted by security cameras perched on top of the Trench’s surface island. The security teams scrambled to finally capture the creature, but it ignored all attempts to capture it. As if completely unconcerned by the humans following it. This continued til sunrise when the Mothman spread its wings and flew away. This was the morning of the same day as the Breakout.
In time, theories about what the Mothman is and its purpose have been furiously debated. Some say it was some sort of unidentified animal, while others claim it was an alien, citing the prevalence of UFO activity around the time it was spotted. Several believe it to be a curse placed on the land 200 years ago by the Shawnee Chieftain Cornstalk. Some believe it was a mutant, caused by the leftover chemicals stored in the TNT Area. Noting the mutations in local wildlife observed in the area. Some say it was an angel, others say the devil. Most seem to hold the belief that the Mothman is a harbinger of doom that appears at the sites of impending disasters.
