While experimenting with shape-shifting,
Loki was captured by the
Storm Giant Geirröðr, and imprisoned in hawk-shape in a
Dwarf-made cage too small to allow him to transform back and free himself.
He tells
Odin to send
Thor in unarmed to negotiate. Thor took the staff Grídarvöl, disguised as a walking stick with him. Geirröðr challenged him to a game to detirmine Loki's fate. He threw lightning at Thor, challenging him to catch it. Thor used Grídarvöl as a lightning conductor, catching the electricity, but was unharmed by it due to being God of Thunder. He then threw the lightning back with a throw so strong that it shattered the pillar Grídarvöl tried to hide behind, killing him.
