Tony's Arc Reactor
When Tony Stark was injured during his capture by the Ten Rings, Dr Ho Yinsen rigged up a powerful electro-magnet to keep metal shrapnel shard from entering Stark's heart, as he lacked the equiptment or facilities to remove the shrapnel himself.
Originally the magnet was powered by a car battery. Once he regained conciousness, Stark was able to miniturise his father's arc reactor design. Due to the energy efficiency of arc reactors, it could be safely embedded directly into his chest, sitting within a metal housing that also contained the magnet.
The reactor produced sufficient excess power that it could be used to power early iterations of the Iron Man Suits.
Shortly after arriving in the past, Stark had the reactor, and the shrapnel, removed. He kept the device as a reminder of what had changed, since in the original timeline he had disposed of it.
Original Timeline
In the original timeline, Stark did not remove the reactor until after defeating Aldrich Killian. He chose to throw the reactor into the sea.

Initially the reactive core was made of paladium, however this was found to be causing blood poisoning. Tony later replaced this with a core of JARVium which released no toxins.
