Ebony Maw is a member of the Black Order and an adoptive son of Thanos.
His exact origins are unknown. It is believed one of his parents was a Sleepwalker, but the species of his other parent are known only to him.
Due to his strategic brilliance, psionic abilities, and powers of suggestion, he was the spymaster of Thanos's Armies, and is sometimes considered the most dangerous of the Black Order.

Special abilities
He is a 'Whisper', a powerful write-only Telepath, possessing the ability to twist the minds of those he speaks to without their being aware of it, even if they have strong psychic defences.
Once he has a psionic foothold in a victim's mind, he can psychically communicate with them over great distances, even tricking them into hallucinating that he is physically present with them or astrally projecting to their location, although he cannot hear them or hold a two-way conversation unless they possess telepathic abilities of their own.
He is also an skilled telekinetic. He is not powerful enough to move large heavy objects or create telekinetic constructs more complex than basic shields, but he has honed the precision and utility of his abilities, allowing him to manipulate a large number of individual objects simultaneously or perform extremely delicate tasks with only his Telekinesis. He can also use his telekinesis to levitate.
He is capable of short to medium range Teleportation, although it is unknown if this is an innate ability, or achieved via technology.

Almost nothing is known about Ebony Maw prior to his joining Thanos's Armies; it is a point of pride for him to operate from the shadows when pursuing his own ends, and his powers of suggestion make concealment relatively easy for him.
At the point he approached Thanos, he was already a highly skilled combatant and strategist with an established network of contacts and informants, suggesting he had been active for many years before this.
Shortly after joining up, he risked his own life in order to telekinetically shield Thanos, saving his life. In recognition of this, Thanos enacted an ancient Titan ritual, which had once been the way Warlords and Kings honoured and rewarded their most loyal warriors, making him a Krazios (adopted son).

His brother Corvus Glaive gave him the moniker "svartun som spinnelket mehan jagr", roughly translated as "the black tongue who spins webs of misfortune wherever he goes".

It is generally accepted among his siblings that he have have emotions, but lacks the ability to feel love or affection for other beings. However, this is based purely on observation, which is extremely unreliable when dealing with someone as skilled in lies and manniplation as Ebony Maw.

He is very much the outsider within the Black Order, lacking the direct family ties shared by his siblings, but this does not mean he lacks any affection for them. He has a deep respect for all their individual abilities, and get on especially well with fellow tactician Corvus Glaive, with whom he often plays games of strategy such as chess.
He is the member of the Black Order who has spent the most time with their younger siblings, the Daughters of Thanos, though it is unclear if this is out of affection, or in service of some scheme or manipulation. He positioned himself as a genuine older brother figure when they were children, teaching them, telling them stories, and even sometimes helping them escape punishment if they had misbehaved or otherwise earned the wrath of their father or other older siblings.
His relationship with Thanos is complex: he has never demonstrated anything less than total loyalty in all the decades he has served him, regularly risking his life to further Thanos's goals or carry out his orders. However, his personality, past behaviour, and interactions with every other sapient suggests this is likely some kind of ruse or part of a larger plan that has just not yet been unveilled.
