The Cloaks of Hush
This is the writings of noble explorer Luwin Amaris First month of Rosedawn, day 1, year 849
Today we saw them for the first time they stood on hills just beyond where we stood, silhouetted by where the Sun was behind the thin Clouds . Dressed in black, despite the despairing heat of the desert. But soon we too will need to clothe heavier, for the Wind is coming. They know it too, because they looked us over once, then disappeared as silent as the Wind they know.
Day 2
I see the unrest in camp as one of the cloaked figures makes their way to our small ramshackle huts. I know that at least the more superstitious among the camp are surely thinking, “Oh well, this sure is a sad way to die.” But I think that they’ve come to barter, they hold out smooth silk cloaks in their hands, a symbol of peace according to the scientists in the group, and I’ll remember why I trust them they any minute now. As they come into the camp I make the signal to not attack and one of them starts talking. I cannot understand the language they are saving, but one of the scientists explains, a look of horror on her face, “they have come to give us two Cloaks of Hush, for one sacrifice for a ritual they must attend to to keep the powers of being Wind-blessed, or being able to fully live in the Windcursed kingdom.”
day 3
I know what must happen. We must continue our mission to hide the object that must not be named, and must be hidden. I cannot ask any of the young soilders who write their name in the list of sacrifice, desperately hoping that they are not the one. No, as much as I grumble about the scientists, they’re the future. An old man like me, I’m not. I’m not the future. I have a plan. I tell the camp, “I know what we must do. As I’m sure you knew when you decided to risk your life to come here to complete our mission, that this mission must be completed. So my lieutenant Lyra will take one of the cloaks and continue on to complete what we must do.
The rest of you will return to our country of Iridia, where I dedicate it to research of magic.”
And then a young soldier asked the question I knew would be asked, “What about the sacrifice?”
And of course I answered it with my plan, “I will be the sacrifice. I cannot ask that of any of you.” I heard an audible sigh of relief. But also disbelief on their faces. It was my lieutenant who first spoke. “You can’t.”
“I must.” It took a long time, lots of tears, but eventually they realized I had set my mind on it. I was going to do it. With the cloak will go this journal, so they can see a bit inside me. So I guess this is my last goodbye, to the world at whole. So goodbye. I only hope Lyra is successful in her mission. Goodbye.
The Magic of the Cloak of Hush
Although we did not disbelieve the group led by Luwin Amaris known as the Survived, the scientists had found
nothing out of the ordinary with these cloaks besides being made with a special kind of silk from desert silkworms, but there was no magic we could find. Until a young intern rose to fame by suggesting that they study the cloaks in the desert, where they learned that the special silk activates in the desert giving the wearer to teleport over small distances. She is now the lead scientist on attempting to replicate the cloaks so that people are able to teleport outside of the desert.
The Calendar
The way that the calendar is generally divided is first into four seasons, Rosedawn which aligns with the season of spring. Rosedusk is the next season and it aligns with the season of summer. Next the fall season of Snowdawn, and finally the winter season of Snowdusk. Next each season is divided into three unnamed months, with thirty days in each one. Most holidays are based on the Seasons related to the stars.
