Devenir

Mother Devenir (a.k.a. Lady of Spring)

When the summer sun beat upon me, burning my skin, I remembered Devenir, and she cooled me.
When the storms of autumn buffeted me and the birds fled, I thought of Devenir, and she lifted my spirits.
When the winter winds chilled me to the bone, and the world was lifeless, I dreamed of Devenir, and her light warmed me.
When spring returned, and the world was reborn, I felt Devenir, and her loving embrace enveloped me, and I was saved.

The great mother, Devenir, speaks to each of us. We dream of spring - they are the dreams of hope, of love, of a world renewed and our place in it assured. Spring is Devenir's time, the time when her love of the world is in fullest bloom, and we can most easily see her beneficence in the world around us. But it is not only in spring that we can feel her touch, and it is not only in the spring that she can lift us up. The heat of summer, when we are expected to work the fields while we sweat and ache, may be claimed by Estaes, but do not turn to her. Devenir will cool your brow with the gentle rains that come if you hold faith in her. When the storms grow worse and it becomes a fight between you and Rosarum  to bring the crops in in time, do not give her your faith in exchange for the crops. Devenir helped you to plant the seeds, and the bountiful harvest was assured when the seeds took root. Rosarum is attempting to take them away from you. And when the winter winds roll across the dead land, and Hiems demands your tribute to survive the long nights, do not give in. Devenir will defeat her, and the land will be born anew.

Those who follow the Great Mother Devenir, who worship her properly, with love and reverence, will not know want. They will not know the ugliness of winter, when the land is dead and life is gone, nor of autumn, when vermin attack the crops and the beautiful birds leave, nor of summer, when the heat twists the workers into grimy shadows of themselves. They will know the beauty of spring! The time when the birds return, and the varied colors of the returning birds fill the sky. The time when the weather becomes pleasantly warm, and the meadows are filled with wildflowers in a riot of colors. Worship with me, my friends - give yourselves to the glory and beauty of spring and of Denevir.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Devenir always appears as a healthy person, usually a woman. She tends to have a healthy glow about her, with lustrous skin and hair. She is always viewed as the most beautiful being the observer has ever seen, even those who have seen other deities.

Body Features

Her body appears as the ideal for the race that she appears as. When appearing as human, she has an hourglass figure; as an elf or Daikini she will be tall and thin, often described as willowy; as a dwarf, she will have strong muscles, an ample bosom, and a luxurious beard. She generally provokes lust in those who see her.

Her skin and hair color are based on the people she appears to. She will be whatever the ideal of the viewer would be.

Facial Features

Devenir matches the highest levels of beauty for the race she appears as. High cheekbones, large and alluring eyes, full lips, and delicate ears are common ways she has been described.

Devenir can be identified by her eyes and hair. Her hair is always long and curly, although the color depends on the form. Her eyes are always green flecked with gold.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Devenir is the Mother of Nature, Lust, and Reverence. She is the embodiment of spring, and worshiped by those who prize love and beauty. She is eternal, and will exist as long as the Jewel persists. She is among the group of deities that would prefer to remake the Jewel in her own image, but she is unlike the others in that she wishes that not for power, but to see her own beauty reflected in the Jewel.

With the recent destruction of Lust, Devenir has been thrown off balance. She would survive a change in the aspect, although she would not be the same, and she does not wish to do so. She has tasked several of her followers to work towards reestablishing Lust as the aspect, and others to fight Corruption and Rot. As long as the others do not solidify a hold, she can remain herself until the Jewel cracks.

Morality & Philosophy

Devenir is one of the Mothers, the deities associated with nature. For her and her followers, beauty and morality are intertwined. Things that are beautiful are right, and things that are ugly are wrong. Most of her followers believe that this flows from beauty - that whether something is right or wrong can be deduced from whether or not it is pleasing to the senses. Some - over-represented in the highest levels of her clergy - believe that it flows the opposite way, and things that are right will please the senses. The distinction is lost on many of her followers. Some from both sides have claimed to have been told directly by the Mother which is which, although the most credible report of her views relates that beauty and rightness are the same, and asking which flows from which is missing the point.

Taboos

There are very few taboos that are associated with Devenir. The ones that do exist relate to bringing ugliness to the world. A follower of Devenir should not intentionally increase the amount of ugliness in the world. This would include torturing people, which leaves scars and other blemishes. This is not to say that all scars are considered ugly to Devenir, as someone doing her will acquiring a scar will receive one that can be seen as dashing or roguish.

Devenir understands that sometimes, her followers must fight for her, and that this can lead to ugliness in the world. Her followers, then, should attempt to erase what they have brought to the world. A follower of Devenir should not leave bodies to rot if possible. Rather, they should endeavor to bury or burn them, returning the land to the beauty that existed before.
