Nighttime Ocular Experiment - Executive Summary
The Nighttime Ocular eXperiment (NOX) project goal was to induce darkvision into humans through induced evolution. This was first conceived of as a long term project, conducted in the depths on the Rahg'hul mine. Unfortunately, the experiment was ended prematurely.
The experiment began with a set of 1000 humans harvested from the local town of Calementum. They were transferred to the played out section of the mine, which had been converted into living space sufficient for them. The area was seeded with an edible bioluminescent fungi and a difficult to see slug as the only sustainable food sources and only source of light. The area was then sealed, and rapid aging solutions were introduced to the water supply allowing for a generation to mature each year.
With an inverse correlation between the amount of light available and the amount of food available, lower light vision became a very attractive trait. Participants were scored on low light vision based on success in finding slugs, which had a carefully maintained population. It was theorized that the number of slugs caught would increase with successive generations, as they eventually acquired full darkvision.
With only ten generations in the test group, we could not yet see a detectable effect. If a new test ground can be established, we recommend restarting it with additional species in the mix.
