Zhentarim

The Zhentarim, often shortened to Zhent and previously known as the Black Network, was a mercenary company, and greater mercantile organization in Faerun, who, over their 200 years of existence, has had a storied history as a cadre of self-serving thieves, spies, assassins and malevolent wizards, and were, for a time,  indentured by their leaders to serve dark gods Bane and Cyric. Over the decades, the organization experienced several leaps and bounds in terms of successes but also major misfortune. As of the late 15th century, the Zhentarim was headquartered in the Western Heartlands, at Darkhold Keep.

History

The Zhentarim were originally founded in 1261 by the dark wizard Manshoon, with the express purpose of conquering Faerun. The original members of the Zhent made alliances with worshipers of Bane to enhance their power and reach.   During the time of the Spellplague, the Zhent instead shifted their focus to the god Cyric, during Bane's supposed death. Throughout this time, the Zhent continued their effort to dominate Faerun, suffering defeats and obtaining successes in equal measure.   In the late 15th century, the Zhentarim began a massive rebranding effort. They dropped the title of "the Black Network" and marketed themselves as elite mercenaries, spies, and bodyguards. While most of their business was strictly legal, the Zhent's ultimate goal was to obtain a monopoly on protection services in Northwest Faerun and, by extension, force local economies to become dependent on them.   In 1492, Raena Nightshade, an agent of the Zhent, worked with Lord Protector Dagult Neverember to convince the Council of Waterdeep to bring on the Zhentarim as equal members. Nightshade, in particular, pressured the Breadwinners to advocate on the Zhent's behalf, subtly threatening to aid the Cult of the Dragon if they refused. The Breadwinners reluctantly agreed, and Nightshade represented the Zhent's interest on the Council of Waterdeep.   Zhentarim agents participated in both the Battle of Hardbuckler and the Battle at the Well of Dragons, disrupting the Cult of the Dragon by infiltrating their camp and sowing chaos.
