Far Realm
The Far Realm is a plane of maddness beyond the standard Great Wheel cosmology and the source of nearly all abberations.
Geography
The Far Realm contains an infinite number of finite layers within it. Unlike the infinite expanses of some Outer Planes, like Mount Celestia or the Nine Hells, the layers of the Far Realm are thin, ranging from a mile to an inch in thickness. Each layer is seperated from another by a translucent, viscious, permeable barrier, allowing an individual to view up to twnety planes at once, with each growing increasingly blurry.
The psionic nature of the Far Realm's inhabitants also affects the plane itself, as the realm's planes, warp, divide, evaporate, and breath upon the will and subconscious thoughts of those within it. Individuals that have peered into the farm realm have compared it to an ever-rolling storm.
Because of the thinness of the Far Realm's layers, most landmarks and even some entities are multidimensional, spanning multiple layers. Such structures and creatures are nearly impossible for non-natives to grasp until viewed from considerable distance, which allows the seemingly disconnected pieces to come together into a massive whole.
Localized Phenomena
Gravity and time do not exist in the Far Realm. In addition, movement in the Far Realm is similar to that of the Astral Sea, requiring thought to propell oneself. The air of the Far Realm has a syrup-like viscosity, allowing for one to try and swim through it, but doing so is difficult and tiring.
History
According to the shardminds, the barrier between the Far Realm and the other planes was maintained by the Living Gate for uncountable years.
During the Dawn War, the mythical war between the gods and primordials before the birth of mortal creatures, the Living Gate was opened, releasing the corruptive power of the Far Realm and its denizens into the multiverse. This power began manifesting in individuals as psionic abilities. Unable to close the gate, a group of various gods decided instead to shatter it, preventing the Far Realm from seeping into reality but allowing for creatures and powerful magic users to cross between the multiverse and Far Realm at will.
Since its shattering, the many shards of the living gate have coalesced into the shardmind people, who seek to rebuild the barrier between realms, though they are not united in how best to do so.
Tourism
Creatures not native to the Living Realm are warned away from visiting it, as doing so exposes one to great danger, both phsyically and mentally. Not few are the stories of great mages that believed they could explore the realm only to have their minds shattered in the process.
