Mindraisers

"You must never forget who you are. From your very first breath you were destined to be above the crowd. You are special, in a way we never were. Better. Stronger. And far more intelligent. My child, never let anyone distract you from your path, never let dead weights burden you. A light in the abyss, that is what you are. And if to transcend your lineage you must forsake us, so be it. If your future, and that of our blood is at that price, we accept it and shall not hold you back.   Whatever you do, whoever you become, hold on to yourself. You are not to be among the lowly mob, and if they above refuse to acknowledge you, shine even brighter, as to blind those that stand in your way. You are your purpose, your destiny moulds you. Accept this gift, make it yours, inside you it will be the closest friend you could dream of, and your deadliest foe. We nurtured it for you, wanting for this time. Absorb it, and exceed your own condition."

Zklklkls, commonly called mindraisers, are small parasitic isopods found within the innermost galleries of ancient Spheres. Clutched onto the walls, they leech on the very essence of their host, its indecipherable mind. They are hunted vermin to some, priceless boons to others. As they devour the complex thoughts of the giants, the minuscule creatures reach a form of enlightenment thought to be the sole realm of higher minds. An acquired mental fortitude that they consent to share to whoever is foolish enough to deliberately become their new host.

Ecology of the intruder

These isopods are very small and experience minimal growth during their lifetime. Their actual size depends on the strain endemic to each Sphere. On Oblogga, they are usually about the same size as an Oblogg's eye, whereas on Ryonmnea it is hardly possible to spot them due to their minuscule body.

Mindraisers are usually found in the deepest cavities of a Sphere, living in colonies of between ten to a hundred individuals spanning a wide area. When their community becomes too cramped, impairing their access to the food source, two phenomenons occur at the same time: the oldest specimens unable to reproduce detach from the wall and crawl on the ground where they wither away, and the youngest migrate to another area of the vast galleries. Thus, they go from an unbearable overpopulation to barely enough mature individuals to sustain their colony. During this time, they are extremely vulnerable and easier to notice because of the agonizing elders. Losing half a dozen of members then is a fatal blow, dooming the group in the long term.

They feed on the Sphere's deep thoughts, latching on the unfathomably large mind to sustain themselves throughout their lives without requiring any other form of nourishment. Their lifespan is directly linked to the cycle of their Sphere, of which they can experience one fully but rarely more.

"On more than one account, Zklklkls are a mystery. But their most peculiar peculiarity is certainly their ability to turn the abstract concept of mind and thoughts into sustenance. Examination of their innards showed no anatomical differences with their close cousins Skrarrens or Zglizzens, save for a couple organs whose purpose eludes me. They may be key to uncover this enigma. I have to dig deeper, and surely I'll find the answers that I crave.

Higher minds, lower minds

Mind is a catch-all term to refer to the mental prowess of an individual, their ability to resist or impose their will on others. It is correlated with intelligence, but loosely. While mostly innate, some remarkable individuals are able to develop one through hardship and perseverance. Thus, higher minds are at the top of any social hierarchy, even the most egalitarian ones. They are elites: Spheriers, scholars and councillors, respected for their indomitable willpower and domination over the lesser minds.

This second category represents the bulk of the population. They are not weak, rather they are the normalcy opposed to the exceptional. The intricacies of the mind are impervious to the lesser minds, no matter how hard they try to make sense of it. This means they are unable to manipulate other's psyche, but worse yet they are utterly powerless against such attempts. Even the most resilient of them is vulnerable to some information that break their model of the world, as was demonstrated by the Genesis hatched from the End.

A question of diet

Mindraisers are not to be mistaken for their close cousins, the Zglizzens. Equally parasitic, the latter take shelter between the enormous teeth, or gills, of Spheres. Their metallic claws allow them to stay immobile and take advantage of the strong currents generated by their immense host. They feed on the prey captured by the Sphere, deducting an amount of flesh insignificant for the titanic being, but enough for them to eat once every three of their internal cycles.

Contrary to mindraisers, they undergo a consequent growth if the food is abundant enough, reaching twice the size of an adult shark by the end of their life. Some spherias harvest them for their flesh once they are ripe.

Keep an open mind

There are many ways to one's mind, but none better than direct access. A Sphere's interior exposes small tendrils looking like glowing anemona. When connected to by any appendage, it provides a link clearer than anything to the creature's inner psyche for who knows their way in. This is how mindraisers feed on their usual source, but Spheriers too have knowledge of these paths and set their housing in places with the most open channels.

Scholars surmise that every living being possesses these tendrils, although if the ratio is identical to that of Spheres they would be undetectable by the naked eye. Furthermore, it has proven difficult to actively look for the activity of one's mind as it means looking inside of them, leading to the death of the subject in most cases. The compatibility of mindraisers, whose only pathway to the mind is the cirri, with most species, is for some a key proof of their existence.

Parasites

Symbionts

We looked for other ways, upturned every shell, but found just empty space.

The discovery that Zklklkls can infect other beings than Spheres is nothing new. Countless stories tell of exhausted Spheriers who collapsed in their room after a particularly rough shift, only to find another presence in their mind as they wake up. This is why some spherias like Oppollln or Ssetssohon assign guards to their spheriers, a role sometimes upheld by a crab consortium.

When an isopod creeps its way into ones body, it settles somewhere on the brain, extending its appendages to integrate with its new host. At this point, removing the parasite is not only lethal for the host, it is downright impossible to separate it from the brain mass. The infection is permanent, as the mindraisers seldom succumb before the body they inhabit. To prevent this situation, it is imperative to eliminate the parasite before it reaches the brain, which usually happens too fast to even notice the violation of their shell.

We knew it was forbidden, that there was no going back. Transgression and survival was our choice.

I was the first to cross the passage. I did so without regret, accepting the consequence for my kin.

Eventually, one found its way inside the thoughts of a lower mind. Situations where the two would cross path were far and few in between, thus it took a long time for the unique interaction to be noticed. Isopods do not simply prey on the intellect of their host, they proceed to an exchange. As they feed, they also let a bit of themselves pervades the victim, granting them memories they never had, or, more spectacularly, a glimpse into a Sphere's mind.

The raw thoughts of a Sphere are wild and overwhelming enough to kill on the spot all but the most experience Spheriers. And yet, when digested and delivered by a mindraiser, they become so simple that even a lower mind can make sense of the cryptic images flashing in front of their inner eye. What's more, through the gift of the isopod, they become able of feats reserved to the sole higher minds. With the assistance of the symbiont, anyone can assume the role of a Spheriers, stand their ground among the elite of a spheria or even take the mantle of a warrior of the mind.

We always expected it to work, but perhaps not that well. I am better than I have ever been. This world, this reality, everything makes sense in a way it never had.

We are twelve now, enough to guide our Sphere once again. Our rebirth shall remain a secret to all and we will not last longer than required for natural-born higher minds come to be.

Despite, or perhaps because of the extraordinary possibility offered by the symbiosis, the process was widely outlawed, in a way the different powers of the Expanse rarely agreed. The main religions declared the practice to be heresy, spheria laws forbid contact with isopods, and public research from the Reef emphasized on the danger rather than the benefits.

The cohabitation with the symbiont is not harmless. After all, mindraisers get their sustenance from the mind, thoughts and memory of their host, slowly depriving them of their identity. If the damage is minimal on the timeless Spheres, regular people and especially lower minds are bound to lose themselves eventually. In many cases, the self is lost entirely, a husk taken over by the parasite now in control.

I feel already that I am not one any more. It is inside me, pleading, conquering, taking over. I must dominate it. Assert my will, while I retain some.

A mindful paradox

In their natural state, mindraisers are primals in their way of thinking. They spend most of their time feeding, breeding and dying, with no other purpose than to extend the lifespan of their species. Even after absorbing the thoughts of a Sphere, a being with a most formidable mind, they remain simple-minded animals.

And yet, should they attach to a sophont mind of less complexity, they are able to learn. As they feast on memories, they acquire some for themselves. Their growth is far from natural, at times they struggle to get past the behaviour of an infant, and other they gain the reflective ability of a scholar in a few inner cycle. Their cognition is not dependent on their host either, as even a hopeless imbecile can birth a genius from their mind.

At some point, most mindraisers gain a conscience of their own, making their own choices. They realize that their host is entirely at their mercy and are even able to communicate with them. From here on, two paths lay before it: either the parasite hijack the body of its victim, manipulating it like a Skipper does with its vehicle and smoulder its will, or it embraces its symbiotic nature and work alongside the host, two minds with a single purpose.

Prohibition

Despite the harsh laws and merciless penalty that befall on anyone caught using the gift of a mindraiser, the appeal is often too great to ignore. Detecting unnatural higher minds is nearly impossible, as they display all the characteristics of a natural-born one, and the mind is their own, with the isopod merely providing discrete assistance. However, identifying a parasite who has entirely taken over the body of its host is easier, as their psyche is odd with lots of gaps and glitches.

For many, the dishonour and fall of their lineage is a greater risk than being caught with a mindraiser. They would rather lie and keep up the pretence of greatness using every tool at their disposal than accept the deliquescence of their owns. Sometimes, it is merely a question of survival. Following a dreadful incident, the Sphere of Lilllohln lost all their Spheriers, down to the last one. With no higher minds to take over, their Sphere was drifting aimlessly, threatening their future.

Desperate, helpless, they turned to the mindraisers gently crawling in the depths of their home. A group bore the burden, becoming spheriers of fortune. Since then, they have never been able to produce any higher mind and rely entirely on the mindraisers to survive. Their whole society revolves around the symbiosis, to the point they secretly share their political power, an isopod taking over the mind of a councillor being recognized as one of its own right, arguing not for the point of its victim but its own.

The Obloggian Perspective

I'll have to admit, being able to become a higher mind in an instant is tempting, alluring even. But if you have to lose yourself in the process? No, it's not worth it. Furthermore, I think there's a good reason for the ban beyond that. The Council has never been one to cut short risky endeavours just because of the individual risks involved. If they do, there's probably an even more dire consequence for integrating the parasite.

And beyond these considerations, am I the only one worried about these things leeching on our Sphere? I mean, there is no way they could truly harm our home, but still I wonder why no extermination campaign has been carried out. Perhaps it is too difficult, or would mean treading on sacred grounds. All that being said, I wonder how they taste.
