The Second Drow Invasion

Two drow generations after the first invasion, the armies of the underworld once again marched to war.

The Conflict

Prelude

After 2 generations, the drow population had recovered. The priestesses decided that now would be a good time to invade the surface world and called together the noble houses to provide supplies or soldiers for the war. The houses of Deepcave, Crystalsword, and Greatcaster met and joined their armies for the invasion. They left the caverns in the winter of 797, correctly assuming that the humans wouldn't be prepared for a war with low supplies. The Nine Caverns army raided numerous human settlements unopposed. However, a large human army, led by House Redfield, arrived in the summer to fight them off. The drow army responded by fleeing into kobold territory and waiting for winter. They easily dealt with the kobolds and had more than enough supplies for the rest of the year. When the seasons turned, the human army withdrew and the drow attacked again, this time leaving garrisons in the settlements. Summer came and the drow did the same thing. However, 739 was the turning point. When the Redfield army came, the drow attempted to withdraw. However, the leader of House Crystalsword saw this as an opportunity to damage the other houses. She turned over the movement plans to House Redfield and they blocked the Nine Caverns army from the kobold territory.

Deployment

The Redfield archers and slingers were deployed on elevated parts of the mountains. The infantry were deployed in a narrow pass with the pikemen in front and the spearmen behind. The archmage was in the rear. The drow deployed with their archers and skirmishers in front. Each house had their own contingent with the spelllcasters in the center protected by the infantry.

Battlefield

The battlefield was in the mountains with gravel making movement tricky. However, the humans had cleared their area of gravel before the battle and had set up in high ground and in a choke point.

Conditions

Both armies were well equipped. However, the Redfield force had the infantry advantage with their pike and spearmen. The Redfield force was also better positioned and much better trained, due to the drow being in a period of relative peace. The drow had a massive ranged advantage, with a lot more spellcasters than the humans. They also had higher morale due to their previous victories over the humans and kobolds. In addition, they were a lot more flexible due to their different contingents.

The Engagement

The battle began with a massive missile barrage from both sides. The drow archers and skirmishers weren't very effective uphill; however, the drow spellcasters destroyed most of the pikemen and a great deal of the archers and slingers. The priests ordered an advance; however, House Crystalsword refused to move. In the confusion, the human infantry reorganized and charged. The archmage didn't act as artillery during the initial barrage, but instead removed the fear from the infantry, preventing them from breaking. He summoned several small earth elementals to join the charge, which was assisted by the clear ground. House Crystalsword withdrew, forcing the other drow to extend their line, making them vulnerable to the Redfield charge. House Deepcave was hit the hardest. They were mostly pale drow and weren't used to fighting with the harsh sunlight on their bodies. They broke the first and House Greatcaster followed.

Outcome

The drow invasion was stopped and House Redfield's place was seen as even more important. A lot of drow priests were killed in the war, causing a leadership crisis within the three houses that participated.

Aftermath

This invasion was much more successful than the last. House Greatcaster became obsessed with the idea of a surface world invasion and started preparing for a third try. House Deepcave was weakened heavily and forbade its members from travelling to the surface world again. The Faland Republic, which ruled most of the Coldlands at the time, gave House Redfield full control of the mountains and access to much larger armies to defend them.
