Reactor
Background
Dr. Alise Mahelani Paoa had dreams that glowed with purpose. A brilliant young nuclear biophysicist born in Hilo and raised partly in the Marshall Islands, she was determined to use science to heal the wounds of war—especially the atomic scars left on Pacific peoples by Cold War-era weapons testing.
After graduating with distinction, she was invited to join a deep-radiation survey team conducting civilian-backed research in the Pacific Proving Grounds. The posting was perfect: cutting-edge science, proximity to her island roots, and a chance to make a difference.
But the assignment was a lie.
Unbeknownst to her, the research crew had been selected by Professor Fallout—an infamous rogue metascientist—for a clandestine human experiment. Radiation shielding was intentionally sabotaged. Their food was laced with synthetic mutagens. And the readings they collected were falsified.
Alise was the only one whose body adapted.
The others became sick—terminally so. She pleaded with Fallout to stop. Instead, he gloated, revealing that her altered DNA now functioned as a living fusion reactor, capable of self-sustaining energy generation. Her panicked strike sent him flying off the ship, but the damage had already been done.
She radioed a distress signal from a nearby atoll and quarantined the ship. Though most of the crew perished, her honesty, sacrifice, and refusal to flee earned her the attention of international agencies.
Rather than imprison her, the UN offered her a pact: submit to medical monitoring and limited service, and in return they would help her search for a cure. Wright Technology International developed a specialized containment armor—the only "power armor" in the world that runs solely on its pilot.
Now known as Reactor, she works with the UN’s Special Threat Response forces, hunting down rogue science criminals, terror groups, and atomic anomalies. But her private mission never ends: the search for Professor Fallout… and for a way to quiet the reactor within.
Personality
Alise is driven by the weight of loss and the power of purpose. Once soft-spoken and idealistic, the trauma of her mutation has tempered her into a focused, quietly resolute figure. She is serious but never cruel, always seeking to de-escalate when possible—but fully capable of becoming an atomic force of wrath if pushed.
Despite her strength, she often feels isolated—afraid to touch others, afraid of losing control, afraid of what she’s become. Yet she never hesitates to act when lives are on the line.
She believes deeply in redemption, in holding villains accountable, and in using her powers to prevent suffering rather than escalate conflict. Her relationship with the UN is complex—grateful, but wary of being seen as a weapon or energy source rather than a woman.
Alise rarely jokes, but when she does, it’s dry and dark. She likes vintage radios, coral diving (in containment mode), and ocean sunsets—one of the few things that still feels entirely peaceful.
