Indrid Cold the Mothman
Background
Indrid Cold came to Earth in 1966 aboard a small Lanulite scout ship, tasked with initiating peaceful first contact. The attempt was... unsuccessful. Cloaked in a well-meaning but deeply unsettling human guise (a man in a shiny blue suit with a too-wide smile), Indrid approached an Earthling with telepathic greeting, calling himself "a friend" and speaking of a peaceful homeworld called Lanulos.
The response was fear, confusion, and the birth of the Grinning Man urban legend.
Soon after, Indrid’s true form—an imposing, winged humanoid with glowing eyes—was glimpsed by townspeople in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. His warnings of disaster were ignored. When the Silver Bridge collapsed, many wrongly blamed him. Thus the legend of the Mothman was born.
Unknown to the public, Indrid Cold is the Mothman. He and his small crew (various alien exiles and explorers) became trapped on Earth following the Core Council’s emergency blockade of Earth’s hyperlanes. Stranded, misunderstood, and feared, Indrid began helping in secret—foiling abductions, combating rogue alien incursions, and delivering prophetic warnings that often went unheeded.
In 1970, UNETF forces attempted to capture him. After several failed operations and near-lethal misunderstandings, Jason Saint intervened personally. After that, Indrid and the so-called “Grinning Men” were brought into the fold as trusted allies. While Indrid still inspires unease, he is now recognized as a protector, not a threat.
He lives with the knowledge that his appearance inspires fear—and does his best to mitigate it. Still, when the world is in danger, he opens his wings and acts.
Personality
Polite, intelligent, and mournfully introspective, Indrid Cold is a reluctant protector. Once bright-eyed and idealistic about interstellar unity, his experiences on Earth have tempered him with realism and patience.
He is slow to anger, but deeply empathetic. Though often misjudged, he holds no grudges toward humans and instead chooses to focus on those who listen, who care, and who fight for better things.
Indrid has grown fond of Earth’s culture—particularly old radio serials, moth documentaries, and melancholy folk songs. He speaks slowly, carefully, with deep awareness of the weight words can carry.
Though heroic, Indrid has a haunted edge. He has seen dozens of deaths that might have been prevented—and remembers every one.
