The Myth of Aster
This Lithsperen myth centers around a wondrous bread from the heavens that restores health and youth. The exact story varies depending on region, but most agree that when the founder of Lithsperen, Lithren, was searching for a place to build a city, his caravan ran out of supplies and his people began starving. They couldn't find any food, and as a result, cried out to Asteroth to feed them. Soon after, a strange kind of bread began raining from the sky. The caravan was saved, and the people called the bread Aster, in honor of the god that gave them provision. The next day, it rained down again, this time providing a strange feeling of strength and even healing the mortally ill among them. Accounts vary even more about what follows after. Some say Lithren founded his city right on that spot. Others say Lithren spoke directly with Asteroth the next day, and was declared to be the one to father the greatest nation of the world. The most popular versions say that Lithren hid away the Aster to be found by only the greatest of his descendents, and will grant them immortality. As a result, treasure hunts for this legendary Aster gain traction every few decades, with a charismatic leader claiming to be the true descendent of Lithren and the one to ultimately lay claim to this treasure. All hunts inevitably fail.
The Church of Asteroth believes the Aster to exist, but only to be showered upon the chosen few, and only in their time of greatest need.
Origins
Nobody is totally certain from where the myth comes from. Most postulate that it originated with the first hunter to seek this treasure, as records from that time are unreliable at best, and there are conflicting reports about whether the hunter left before or after the first written account of the myth. The Church of Asteroth believes the Aster to exist, but only to be showered upon the chosen few, and only in their time of greatest need.
