Hell

Hell is the place on a realm where demons reside. Each realm with sapient species on it contain a Hell, though the properties can vary wildly between realms. Hell should not be confused with the afterlife where the souls of evil mortals go upon death which is found in many religions.  

Properties

Hell is typically a dark, inhospitable place which is separated from the mortal realm and the afterlife by physical and/or magical barriers, preventing the demons inhabiting it from escaping. Of particular note is that Hell is free of fuliginous and nivose energy, as both of these elements are anathema to demons. It is thought that the lack of these elements is what drives demons to their depravities. Instead, Hell tends to be dominated by the antielements, gas, steam, and void.   The barriers of Hell are frequently imperfect, allowing demons to slowly escape over time. On occasion, these barriers are maintained by mortals and any lapses in maintenance can be disastrous. Mostly, these imperfections are small, allowing only weaker demons to escape, with the larger and more dangerous ones escaping less frequently. These imperfections technically allow mortals to enter as well.   Hell is dangerous for mortals to enter. Not only are demons ominpresent, the atmosphere and land itself often contain extreme dangers such as boiling lava lakes, corrosive sulfurous rain, and poisonous air. These dangers make it so only the strongest mortals dare enter Hell, though there are very few reasons to actually do so.  

Purpose

The actual purpose of Hell is not well known. Scholars mostly believe that demons are an inevitable consequence of mortals with free will, thus Hell is created by the gods as a method of containing them. However, Hell does not seem to be inhospitable to demons, which it seemingly would if the gods were designing it to hamper them. Nor do the gods utilize their angel servants to destroy demons, even when they emerge into the mortal world. Despite this, gods almost never consort with demons, instead fully opposing them. The only one who has, Odr, was destroyed by the other gods of its realm.
