Third son of Genghis Khan (Temujin) and Borte; Ogedei would inherit the empire at the death of his father; it was Ogedei's death in 1241 that caused the Mongol army to pull up stakes at their post on the Danube River and return to Karakorum, rather than invade the city of Vienna;
