Naming Celestial Objects
After multiple millenia of confusion, most of the known universe has agreed on a system for naming galaxies, planets moons and other celestial objects.
Planetary Systems
A planetary system inherits its name from its central star.
i.e Sol System/Solar System
Planets
There are two systems to naming planets. One is location based and the other depends on the species that inhabits it. Uninhabited planets therefore only have one name while colonized or naturally populated planets have two.
Geographical Name
The first part of the name is the name of the nearest star, followed by the planets position in its system.
I.e Sol-4 aka "Mars"
Population Name
First the name of the species' origin planet, followed by the order of when it was colonised in Latin.
I.e Terra Secundus aka. "Mars"
A species' origin planet gets the second name 'Prime'.
I.e Terra Prime aka. "Earth"
Moons
Take the name of the planet it is orbiting and add a number, biggest moon to smallest. Often abreviated to the first letters of the name plus the number.
i.e Terra Prime-1/TP-1 aka. "the Moon"
