History
Formation
As the First War for Liberation came to its inevitable conclusion, the freedom fighters were driven back into the most remote parts of the continent. They hid among the ones they were fighting for, seeing the toll the war took.Establishing contact between these groups proved to be difficult, until the enemy seemed to pull back for no apparent reason. Only for the Scorching to follow. When the forces left the continent, they left behind a populace that was decimated, broken and on the brink of total destruction.
There was no way to keep fighting and win, so the last few remaining cells of soldiers put down their weapons and decided to join the rebuilding, forming a small alliance that would eventually grow into one larger organization that would never forget its original purpose. The heart of the people still beats and as long as it does, there is hope for independence.
Work
After the Scorching, there was no longer anything left to fight for. Most of the cells decided to work on rebuilding their communities instead and focused on the survival of the few remaining cities and villages.Making their way across the continent, the first wave was still rather uncoordinated and mainly focused on treating the wounded and gathering the few survivors that were left. The second wave followed soon after, organizing those survivors into work forces that could be made to clean up the battle fields and prepare them for a new season of crops. The last and final wave came a decade after the Scorching and aimed to rebuild the lost cities and destroyed towns. At this point the organisation was officially and forcefully disbanded.
Current Times
Current Work
Officially the Still Beating Heart is a part of history, but it is an open secret that many still operate under that name, trying to return a smidgeon of that former glory. Any may take up that mantle and many smaller groups have, forming a small alliance of likeminded individuals, reminiscent of their roots. This allows them to quickly disavow anyone that poses to be a danger and turns the eye of the colonial officers on them.
The best known parts of the organization are those that focus on the care of for the homeless and otherwise unfortunate. It is often seen, that their workers hand out food and clothing to those in need. More well off branches also frequently build orphanages and poor houses.
In more rural areas they tend to work the fields with the farmers, taking little in return.
Controversies
Many an agent has been accused of "stirring the pot" and trying to recruit the more desperate for another war of liberation, making their help contingent on promises no one should be forced to give. The same goes for the orphanages run by them, many have been called indoctrination centres, especially by those that are still closer to the old world.Struggles
Many associated with the Still Beating Heart have been subject to harassment by the colonial officers and are under intense scrutiny. At times the common populace also turns against them, as they fear the retribution of their rulers, if they are found to house the members of the organisation.
