Moon Drinkers

strange creatures, don't really know where they came from

Appearance

Their appearance is sinewy, like a flying snake without its scales. Its arms stretch out to the side, near the head, while long leathery flaps connect them to the body and tail. There are no legs to be found. In colour, their upper side resembles the dirty ground of the plains, with browns and yellows being prominent, a few splotches of green and tan can also be found on some individuals. their bellies are kept in shades of grey, with slightly swirling and morphing patterns used to tell the individuals apart.
Their mouths are circular and studded with rows upon rows of teeth, they seem incapable of losing them.

Behaviour & Ecology

The creatures most often appear during dusk and dawn. They almost always move in smaller flocks of eight to twelve individuals. Multiple flocks may choose the same herd as their feeding grounds. When they do so, they tend to split it between them, rarely overlapping and feeding on the same animal.
When a flock is disturbed by a farmer, it tends to spread out and only reappear after the imminent danger seems to have passed. It is possible to train them to accept the presence of another being if exposed often enough. In this case they will feed quietly while avoiding contact and flee if one comes within an arms reach.

Notable Traits or Abilities

Whenever a flock of Moon Drinkers chooses a herd as their feeding grounds, a peculiar thing happens. They seem to feed on the colour of the animals, slowly bleeding it out. In return the Mooncattle affected grows much larger and stronger than the remaining animals of the herd.
They seem to subsist on nothing else, captured creatures refuse to feed on the provided pelts and rarely accept cattle provided to them. They wither away fast when not fed properly.

Cultural Significance or Myths

It is unknown when exactly the first Moondrinkers appeared, but there are no records of them from the first waves of settlers. First notes of them had only been made after the Mooncattle had been bred.

Secrets or Uncovered Knowledge

Influences by the Silence of Winter, they are quite literally drinking away the Darkness out of the Mooncattle, allowing them to grow to their true possible size and denying them to the Darkness. They are derived from the Divers native to the region and were artificially created by a group of mages closer to the truth.
