The Mighty Dragon

“Never get on the bad side of a dragon, they hold their grudges for a looong time...”

Appearance

Dragons are varied in their appearance. All have in common that they have six limbs, two legs in the front, two legs in the back and two strong wings to carry them into the air.
Some shine in all colours, while most of them only exhibit one in a variety of hues, shades and variants. Generally their domineering size impresses their majesty upon the people that have honour of being confronted by such a being.

Behavior & Ecology

Dragons tend to create hoards. Within mountains and caves, within forests or deep beneath the waves. Thanks to their grandios life spans, they tend to accumulate wealth, be it from scared townspeople trying to soothe them with gifts, be it from their own travels or even from raids. But their true hoards depend on the individual, some hoard people, others knowledge relating to a certain topic while others look for a certain type of magical item.

Notable Traits or Abilities

During their long life, dragons tend to acquire a large amount of magical skill. Even the youngest hatchlings possess the ability to shapeshift into a humanoid form, allowing them to hide among the regular people of the world.
Whenever a dragon decides to settle close, or even within a humanoid settlement, their internal magic beginns to suffuse the surrounding people. More and more children will begin to be born as dragonborn as the years fly by. This effect stays for a long time, even after the dragon has left - generally it is said that the older the dragon is, the stronger this magical pull becomes.

Cultural Significance or Myths

Wherever a dragon chooses to appear, it tends to spread chaos and fear. People do not know how to react to a creature of such power. Only the people of the Southern Reaches have developed a way to live with their dragon patrons.

Adventure Hooks

  • An abandoned hoard has been discovered, do you dare to venture into it?
  • A dragon has been sighted and the locals need brave fools to discover its intentions.

Secrets or Uncovered Knowledge

“How the modern Dragons came to be”
Modern dragons are an attempt of the First Expedition to recreate the native fauna of their home. Only few dragons ever existed on Gondwana, being pseudo-dragons that were infused with great amounts of magic and a long live - which enabled them to grow smarter and larger over centuries. Much more common were the lesser drakes, which were used for the experiments. The essence of humanoids was bound to the essence of drakes, giving rise to the first modern dragons.

When a dragon wants to raise a child, they find a humanoid they believe to align with. Spinning them into an egg, they kickstart the transformation. In this process the person loses their memory and parts of their identity, which may return with age.
If the egg is treated wrongly during the hatching process, the resulting creature may deform and be born as a wyvern, basilisk or other draconic creature.
The choice of lesser animals, like dogs often results in the drakes that can be found on Hyperborea.
