The Wurzelhavian Guard

The Wurzelhavian Guard is the official city guard of Wurzeldorf. Their main tasks are enforcing the law and keeping the city safe from outside threats. As such, guards can be seen patrolling the streets inside and outside the city wall, as well as being posted in the defensive towers on the walls.

Hierarchy

All guards answer to the captain of the guard, whom is the only person to hold a different position than the rest of the guard. The captain answer directly to the city council.   In special circumstances, a captain in charge might be selected, which the rest of the guards in the group must answer to. A captain in charge is a temporary substitue for the captain of the guard, if they need to be elsewhere. While it's not an actual position, the captain of the guard might favor specific guards they find dependable for this job.

Law Enforcement

Enforcing the law in all its forms lands on the shoulders of the city guard. Guards are free to decide how to handle minor offenses, which usually means giving someone a talking to, or subduing someone unruly. Worse offenses usually require them to bring the criminal in for questioning, often along with witnesses, whereupon the captain will decide on a punishment.

City Defense

The Wurzelhavian Guard is the main defense against external threats to Wurzeldorf.

Watch Towers

The guard has people stationed in every defensive tower at all times, keeping a lookout for possible external threats. These threats are usually in the form of wild beasts roaming too close to the farms, or attacking monsters.

Rangers

Rangers are uniquely skilled guards that patrol the forest surrounding Wurzeldorf. Their job is to dissuade dangerous creatures from getting too close to the city, and preemptively warn the city if dissuasion doesn't work. They're considered to be the same rank as any other guard.

Employment

Guard

Getting work as a guard is as usually easy as showing up and ask. As long as you fulfill the physical requirements, you're given a uniform and set to work. It's a common way for people to earn some extra money.   Guard duty doesn't pay well, but it's usually enough to keep food on the table and a roof over the head. Guards also has free access to sleeping in the barracks, and a free meal every day. Wages do increase with seniority however, and someone with several years of service can have a comfortable lifestyle. Guards usually work for eight to twelve hours every day.   Rangers do get slightly higher wages than other guards, as their work is more dangerous.

Captain of the Guard

Becoming the captain of the guard is very difficult, on the other hand. First of all, the position must be open. Second, only people with many years of guard experience is considered for the position. Third, they must have the skills necessary for the bureaucratic work as well as a mastery of the skills of a guard. And finally, one must be considered to be of excellent character, so as not to abuse the powers that comes with the job.   The captain of the guard is paid quite well, and their wages are decided upon by the city council. They also work long hours, generally much longer than the guards they employ, usually not having time for much else than work or sleep.
