Temple of the Three Dragons

The Temple of the Three Dragons is a prominent religion in Kortharc, and especially in Geldarc. The Temple of the Three Dragons worships Bahumut, father of dragons, Tiamat, the vengeful mother, and Gaios, the Earth Dragon. This worship of Bahumut along with Tiamat may seem contradictory to the outside observer. However, the worship of these Dragons is done in a manner that is often more figurative than literal, and the dragon Gaios is the creature most strongly worshiped by this religion. And the worshipers of the Three Dragons would certainly not commit atrocities on Tiamat's behalf, though they might at times oppose the advance of civilization with fire.   Viewed from a more meta level, The Temple of the Three Dragons suggests how the creation myths humans tell themselves affect not only human views on the world, but human actions as well. Followers of the Temple of Three Dragons believe that Magic either flows from the world, which they view as the body of the ancient dragon Gaios, or is given as a gift of divine gods. As such, The Temple of the Three Dragons tends to strongly oppose forms of arcane magic, especially from wizards.   The Temple of the Three Dragons is interesting largely due the parallels and differences it has from cosmology in our world. The Temple is clearly different from religions in our world, specially through its explicit understanding of magic. This understanding of magic provides an interesting perspective counter to those common in society, as it implicitly suggests that arcane magic is a resource that must be conserved.

Public Agenda

Promote the worship of The Three Dragons; discourage use of arcane magic

Cosmological Views

In the mythic past of the universe, Gaios was fatally injured in battle with Vaxios, the great darkness, though Gaios' children fought off Vaxios and banished Vaxios. Gaios's children then built a great monument to Gaios out of Gaios' body, which they called Gaia, the earth. From the body of Gaios flowed magic and life into Gaia, allowing things to flourish on Gaia, and weaving magic into the fabric of life on Gaia.

Tenets of Faith

Magic originates from Gaios, and slowly flows out into the world. Magic is thus a finite resource, rather than an infinite well of power. Magic that is used should be used to spread the worship of Gaios, and increase the beauty of Gaia. Powerful spells, magic devices, etc, should not be created or used unless by the followers of Gaios.     Use magic sparingly. Protect Gaia and Gaios.   Those who specifically worship Bahumut also follow these tenets: Beautify Gaia. Protect the Children.   Those who instead worship Tiamat follow this tenant: Protect the tomb. Punish the trespassers.

Ethics

Carful use of Magic. Protection and beautification of the world. Protection of living creatures.

Worship

Worshipers of Bahumut often wear a dragon broach on their clothes, and serve as stewards of the wilderness. Worshipers of Tiamat wear a Dragon Crest on their armor or shields.   A sacrifice a flying creature, caught in the wild, is considered a good sacrifice for both Gods. Those who wish to show their patronage to Bahumut may do so by protecting defenseless creatures. Those who wish to show their patronage to Tiamat do so by sabotaging wizards, warlocks, and sorcerers.

Political Influence & Intrigue

In Kortharc, the Temple of the Three Dragons is the lesser of two religious organizations that stress the danger of magic and the importance of strongly regulating the use of magic. The Temple of the Three dragons is the primary religion in Geldarc, causing Geldarc to use its political weight to check the council of Maji.
