The Creation of Noble Houses

Instructions on how Clans and Houses should be designed to work together and not violate the lore or power-system

Created and Written by Khali A. Crawford
In general terms, when the term Kingdom or Kingdom adjacent words are used, they refer to an organization under the command of a House while an Empire is a collection of Kingdoms under the command of a ruling Kingdom, the same idea of Clans and Houses, just much bigger. In a Kingdom, it typically only spans 10-20 star systems with each system ruled by a Major Clan and Lesser Clans under them.

Structure

Lineages serve as the foundational threads of familial and organizational ties within a complex social structure known as the Clan. A Clan, in essence, represents a formal association of individuals or groups united by a common purpose or objective. However, it is vital to understand the hierarchical structure within this framework, which encompasses Lineages, Clans, and the overarching concept of a House.
  1. Lineages: These are the ancestral bloodlines tracing their origins to a specific individual or a group of people. Lineages are the fundamental building blocks upon which the entire Clan system is constructed. They form the genealogical links that bind individuals within a Clan and often hold historical significance.
  2. Clans: Clans are the next tier in this intricate hierarchy. They comprise a collective of Lineages, individuals, or groups that share common values, goals, or affiliations. A Clan represents a cohesive unit within a broader social context, functioning as a tightly-knit community with a singular purpose or objective.
  3. Houses: The concept of a House introduces an additional layer of complexity. Houses are formed when multiple Clans come together, allowing one Clan to assume a position of leadership for the collective benefit of all Clans within the House. Essentially, a House unifies Clans under a common banner, promoting cooperation and collaboration among them.
As it can be understood, a House is made up of serval Clans and a Clan is the formal organization of one or more Lineages or cultures.
Clans are composed of Lineages or groups of people bound by some social, cultural, political, or religious factor. Within the leaders of the Clan, a Chieftain arises who is the foremost source of authority. They had the power to make decisions on behalf of the clan and to settle disputes between members. The Chieftain is advised by their Small Council traditionally composed of sage elders who offer wisdom and experience in leadership. They also contain a number of subject matter experts on anything from diplomacy to engineering, typically focused on the largest business of the Clan.
Whereas Lineages, or otherwise informal groups, operate in close-knit communities, Clans have the capacity to operate on a planet-wide scale, and sometimes much bigger. As such they are formal organizations that must be recognized by the authority of the land, or they establish themselves as the authority of the land. Clans have many Offices that make them up with each one serving a goal to support the entire Clan. The Office of Genealogy and Historical Records, short-handed for the Office of Records (OR), serves to document the entire history of the Clan, as well as the vast and rich history of its bloodlines, ethnic groups, and cultures. The OR are important for maintaining a true and accurate report of the Clan's existence, which is extremely important when proving relation to historical figures. Clans that possess an Inherited Magical Jutsu take this matter very seriously and these Clan ORs wield incredible political power within their Clans.
The biggest authority they hold is controlling who can marry whom and dictating how many blood offspring they will need to produce for the stability of the Clan and the future of the Jutsu. IMJs are engraved in the DNA of a Clan and will magically remain loyal to a certain genealogy, to tamper with this too much or introduce too many rogue elements may risk mutating the Jutsu or nullifying it altogether. To this end, ORs also compose a Clan Gene Seed, a complete blueprint laying out the precise genetic engineering and biological mutating that needs to be done to reproduce a Jutsu. The Gene Seed is a key to the secrets of a Clan's Jutsu and is guarded violently. This is due to the nature of IMJs as they exist beyond the DNA and seep deeper into the mind and way of life of a people, basically the IMJ is just as much engraved in the culture of a Clan as it is in the DNA. This is why preserving the culture and traditions of a Clan is so important, it literally reinforces their magical jutsu and to wipe out or change their ways at a constant rate over a period of time will change the jutsu. Naturally, members of the Clan who inherit the Jutsu are intentionally kept ignorant about the finer details of their own Jutsu.
There are serval other Offices that a Clan may create to sustain itself but they can be logically inferred and do not need to be elaborated here unless absolutely needed. As far as the organization of a Clan is concerned, the Chieftain is the absolute authority, and below them is their Small Council, although most Chieftains hold their Clan Elders to be a step above themselves. The various Office Directors also sit on the Small Council and they each preside over their own Offices as they see fit in accordance with the will of the Chieftain. There is no royal family of a Clan but there are Main and Cadet branches, though this separation is not a hierarchy in nature. The Main Branch refers to the original group, or founding groups, and Cadet Branches are smaller social, cultural, political, or religious groups added in later.
When speaking of Houses, this template for Clans is multiplied and expanded upon greatly. A House is a formal alliance or organization of serval Clans under one ruler, a Head of Household. The HoH is from the Ruling Clan who has been elected or appointed to lead the other Clans, according to their own laws and customs. Under the umbrella of a House, a new shared culture begins to form and in this new shared culture, multiple IMJs are created and shared that do change the culture and genetic makeup of the individual Clans, but they bring new ideas and new blood into the mix. This results in a House composed of several small Clans where they all share 7-8 IMJs between each other, allowing for greater genetic diversity and cultural exchange while still being bound by the umbrella of the House. Gene Seeds are still considered Proprietary, but Clans are open to exchanging parts of their Gene Seed to learn more about others and improve their own.
The HoH's Small Council is composed of Elders from all the Clans, a variety of subject matter experts of all kinds, and the Chieftain from each Clan. They all come together to advise the Head of Household on internal matters and the direction of the House.

Culture

The culture of a Clan or House stands as a foundational pillar, intricately woven into the fabric of its social structure and the essence of its Magical Jutsu. A culture, in this context, encompasses a multifaceted array of elements: Beliefs and Values, Social Structure, Customs and Traditions, Language, Art and Aesthetics, Economy and Trade, Governance and Legal Systems, and Family and Social Relationships. These components collectively define the identity and character of a Clan or House, influencing the nature of their magical abilities and shaping the interactions among their members.
The Office of Culture and Social Behavior, known simply as the Office of Culture (OC), shoulders the crucial responsibility of cultivating and preserving this intricate cultural landscape for the benefit of the people. This office functions as the guardian of the cultural heritage, undertaking a variety of tasks to ensure the vibrancy and continuity of the Clan or House's way of life. One of the key roles of the OC involves the organization of cultural events and the establishment of public holidays. These initiatives serve to celebrate and reinforce the core beliefs, customs, and traditions that define the cultural identity of the Clan or House. By creating spaces for communal gatherings, the OC fosters a sense of unity and shared identity among the members.
Moreover, the OC plays a pivotal role in addressing social disputes within the community. By mediating conflicts and promoting understanding, the office contributes to the maintenance of a harmonious social environment. This emphasis on social cohesion extends to ensuring the equitable representation of all segments of the culture in positions of authority, fostering inclusivity, and preventing the marginalization of any group within the Clan or House. The cultural bubble metaphorically describes the environment crafted by the OC. This is a space where the members of the Clan or House feel a profound sense of belonging and acceptance. By actively managing and enriching the cultural aspects, the OC contributes to the creation of a welcoming and nurturing atmosphere that resonates with the values and traditions of the community.

The Full Standard
A Full Standard is a Mon + a Plaid design and together they can represent a Clan or House.
  • Mon - Emblem of Identity: The Mon, a distinctive emblem, serves as a visual representation of a Clan. Typically opting for simplicity to ensure recognizability, most Clans choose uncomplicated designs that capture the essence of their identity. However, Clans with a storied history may deviate, utilizing more complex Mons that reflect the depth and richness of their narrative. The Mon acts as the great seal of a Clan; any document lacking this symbol may be summarily dismissed. This emblematic insignia encapsulates the very essence of a Clan's identity, acting as a signature of authenticity and authority.
  • Plaid - Woven Iconography: The Plaid, a complex array of intersecting geometric shapes and designs, stands as another form of iconography representing the Clan. The patterns, colors, and thickness of the designs are variable, offering a unique visual effect that distinguishes one Clan from another. Much like the Mon, the Plaid is a symbol of identity, often displayed alongside the emblem on banners and flags. Notably, the Plaid is not static; it undergoes alterations within different groups of the Clan, be it social, cultural, political, or religious. However, these alterations adhere to a defined dogma, maintaining a clear connection to the overall Plaid and exclusively serving internal purposes, never representing the entire Clan externally.
  • Ceremonial Attire - Living Canvases: Members of Clans proudly don ceremonial robes mirroring the distinct Plaid of their lineage during special cultural events. These robes, akin to living canvases, showcase the rich and unique patterns that identify their roots. The act of wearing ceremonial attire becomes a source of pride and connection, fostering visual harmony that resonates with the shared history and traditions of the Clan. This visual representation reinforces a collective sense of identity during significant cultural occasions.
  • Application Across Mediums: The influence of Clan identity extends beyond attire, with the Plaid finding its place on starships, military forces, leisure wear, and various clan-produced materials. Colors, designs, and shapes are carefully chosen, creating a cohesive visual language that communicates the essence of the Clan. This strategic application ensures that the Plaid becomes a ubiquitous and recognizable symbol, conveying not just visual aesthetics but also the core values, culture, and identity of the Clan to external observers.
When it comes to Houses, a distinctive approach is adopted to integrate the symbols of constituent Clans into a unified representation. In terms of Mons, a shield is crafted to showcase the emblems of the Major Clans within the House. This collective display serves as the Mon of the House, exemplifying a harmonious blend of individual Clan identities. In some instances, the Mon of the ruling Clan may also double as the House Mon, further solidifying the House's overarching visual identity.
In contrast to the approach with Mons, a novel strategy is employed for Plaids within Houses. A completely new Plaid is meticulously designed to symbolize the House as a whole. Clans, however, are expressly prohibited from utilizing the House Plaid unless they are engaged in official business on behalf of the House. This restriction underscores the importance of maintaining a clear distinction between Clan and House identities.
Furthermore, an unequivocal rule is established within Houses: Clans are forbidden from displaying the Mon or Plaid of a different Clan, a practice known as False Flagging. This prohibition carries significant consequences, emphasizing the sanctity of Clan and House symbols. False Flagging is not only a breach of cultural integrity but also a violation of the inherent trust and unity within the House. Such actions are met with severe repercussions, reinforcing the importance of respecting and upholding the visual identity of both Clan and House. This stringent code ensures that symbols retain their authenticity and meaning, safeguarding the integrity of the Houses' cultural legacy and collective identity. Standards are managed by the House Office of Heraldry.

Military

Clans, as autonomous entities, uphold a comprehensive military infrastructure encompassing Naval forces, Army units, and Space Marines collectively known as Troopers. This combined force constitutes the backbone of a Clan's military might. The majority of the Clan's military strength is vested in the Troopers, illustrating their integral role in the Clan's overall defense strategy.
  • Landed and Charged Knights: Positioned above Space Marines, Landed Knights and Charged Knights represent the pinnacle of a Clan's military hierarchy. Landed Knights, bound by an unbreakable Oath Eternal to a Clan, play a dual role as both warriors and planetary rulers, overseeing entire planets on behalf of their Lords. Charged Knights, on the other hand, are career Knights, often originating from Space Marine backgrounds, and are not bound by an Oath. Their strategic prowess and versatility make them invaluable assets to the Clan's military might.
  • Rōnin and Sellswords: To augment their forces, Clans may enlist the aid of Rōnin (masterless warriors) and sellswords. These additional forces provide flexibility and supplementary strength, offering Clans the ability to adapt to diverse military challenges as they arise.
Within Houses, a structured system of military obligations is established to ensure both individual Clan autonomy and collective defense capabilities.
  • Clan Obligations: Each Clan within a House is mandated to maintain a military force meeting specific size and capability standards. This dual requirement serves the purpose of self-defense for individual Clans and contributes to the broader strength of the House.
  • Household Military: In addition to individual Clan forces, Houses mandate the formation of a centralized Household Military. This military body operates under the direct command of the Head of Household, acting as a unified force that can only be employed externally or against rogue Clans. The Household Military ensures a consolidated response to external threats while maintaining internal order within the House.
The establishment of these military structures underscores the delicate balance between individual Clan autonomy and the collective strength of Houses. By maintaining their Troopers and Knights, Clans uphold their self-reliance, while the requirement to contribute to the Household Military guarantees a unified defense against external adversaries and rogue elements within the House.

Education

Skálds, revered as erudite masters, play a pivotal role in the intellectual development of the noble class. Proficient in a diverse range of subjects, including Philosophy, Literature, Poetry, History, Arithmetic, Magic, Higher Reasoning, Science, and Technology, Skálds are trained from childhood to serve as esteemed tutors and advisors to noblemen across the cosmos.
To formalize the educational process, Houses align themselves with Skáldic Colleges, entering into agreements to employ a specific number of Skálds. These Skálds are supported by Professors, Educators, and an extensive staff dedicated to their needs, collectively forming the House University. The HU is an exclusive education organization limited to members of Clans within the House, dedicated to nurturing the intellectual development of the younglings.
The House University is open to all legally recognized Clan members, regardless of their noble rank or social status. This inclusivity ensures that education is not restricted by birthright, offering an opportunity for intellectual growth to all Clan members. Due to the extensive training required, Skálds are highly valued and, consequently, expensive to hire. Smaller Houses often establish a single House University (HU) to secure the services of Skálds, while larger and financially secure Houses may establish multiple HUs across their domain. Beyond their primary role as educators, Skálds offer a range of invaluable services to their House, contributing to various aspects of noble life and governance.
  • Counseling and Advice: Skálds, with their extensive knowledge, serve as wise counselors and advisors to nobility and royalty. They provide guidance in matters of statecraft, politics, internal affairs, and personal concerns, enhancing the decision-making capabilities of their benefactors.
  • Preservation of Legacy: Skálds take on the responsibility of collecting and retelling the exploits of their Lords or Lieges through poems and sagas. This serves to immortalize the achievements and legacies of their benefactors, ensuring they resonate through future generations.
  • Legal and Political Assistance: Skálds lend their expertise to matters of law and politics, aiding in the drafting and interpretation of laws. Their participation in the decision-making processes of noble households contributes to the effective governance of the House.
  • Cultural Integration: In service to a Lord or Liege, Skálds seamlessly adapt to the cultural and societal norms of their benefactor. This ensures their ability to best serve the needs and wishes of their host, fostering cultural harmony within the House.
  • Household Management: Skálds extend their role beyond education to oversee the staff of a House or provide companionship to nobles. This comprehensive approach ensures the smooth functioning of the household and addresses the emotional needs of its patrons.
  • Historical Documentation: Skálds, through their journeys across the cosmos, document historical events and accounts. This not only contributes to the historical records of their College but enriches the broader societal understanding of historical narratives.
  • Intellectual Contributions: Skálds, as intellectual luminaries, may produce logical theorems and spells, contributing to the intellectual and magical knowledge of their world. This intellectual legacy further elevates the reputation and influence of their House.

Infrastructure

Seats of Power
A Seat of Power signifies a designated planet formally recognized as the homeworld or capital of a Clan. This planetary stronghold serves as the epicenter where the Chieftain, along with their inner circle, establishes their residence. It embodies the highest level of protection and sensitivity within a Clan's domain. At the House level, a Household Seat of Power takes precedence. Functioning as the capital for the entire House, it stands as the paramount symbol of House authority and serves as the central hub for political, economic, and cultural activities. While the Household Seat of Power assumes the primary role, Clan Seats of Power maintain a crucial but secondary position within the overall hierarchy. Each Clan designates its own Seat of Power, representing a center of authority within the larger House framework.
The establishment and maintenance of Seats of Power carry profound implications for the stability and influence of Clans and Houses. A Seat of Power is not merely a geographical location; it is a symbolic center representing the essence of Clan or House identity. It encapsulates the history, traditions, and aspirations of its inhabitants, serving as a physical manifestation of their collective narrative. Beyond its security role, a Seat of Power functions as a cultural and political hub. It houses the decision-makers, archives of knowledge, and artifacts of historical significance, consolidating the heritage and identity of the Clan or House.
Kabane: The Hereditary Pillars Of Noble Authority
Kabane stands as the cornerstone of noble authority within Clans, representing hereditary titles that carry profound political and social implications. These titles not only symbolize the distinguished lineage of a Clan but also function as the paramount determinants of its standing within the larger House. Passed down through generations, Kabane embodies the succession of political responsibilities and privileges, encapsulating the accumulated wisdom, traditions, and societal contributions of each Clan.
  • Historical Resonance: Kabane serves as a custodian of unique legacies, ensuring a sense of continuity and historical resonance within noble Clans. The titles become a living record of the Clan's achievements, preserving and carrying forward the mantle of leadership.
  • Political Insignia: Kabane acts as a potent political insignia, signifying the House's political and social status. The inherent connection between Kabane and political influence establishes a distinct hierarchy among Clans, where each title serves as a silent proclamation of historical achievements and the enduring trust placed in the Clan's governance across generations.
The importance of Kabane extends beyond mere symbolism, playing a pivotal role in the social and political fabric of the noble Clans.
  • Proof of Lineage and Worth: Kabane serves as tangible proof of a Clan's legendary and storied lineage, elevating it within the hierarchical structure of the House. Higher Kabane not only signifies political prowess but also becomes a marker of prestige, worth showcasing and protecting.
  • Marital Dynamics: The acquisition and maintenance of Kabane are intricately tied to marital decisions. Cross-Kabane marriages carry significant implications, as legal offspring inherit the lowest Kabane in such unions. This intricacy creates a strategic approach to marriages, with noblemen carefully selecting partners from their own Kabane or higher. Lower Kabane unions risk diminishing the political power of the entire Clan.
The distribution and regulation of Kabane are under the purview of the House's Office of Heraldry. This administrative body manages the intricate web of marital alliances, ensuring the preservation and strategic elevation of Kabane within the Clan hierarchy.

Currency
At the Clan level, the choice of currency is often aligned with the ruling authority above them. Clans typically utilize the currency dictated by the higher political echelons, promoting consistency and ease of transactions within the broader political structure. The dynamics shift when it comes to Houses. Instead of adhering strictly to external currency standards, Houses take the initiative to adopt and establish their own currency. This unique currency becomes the primary medium for economic dealings within the House, fostering internal cohesion and logistical efficiency.
The adoption of a House-specific currency streamlines internal economic processes. All Clans under a House are mandated to use this currency for their economic transactions within the House. This strategic move aims to create a unified economic system, enhancing the House's ability to manage and regulate its internal financial affairs. While internal economic activities operate on the House's specific currency, external business transactions follow a different protocol.
  • Use of External Currency (Hosar): Clans and Houses engage in external trade and transactions using Hosar, the predominant currency widely accepted across the universe. This approach ensures a standardized means of conducting business beyond the confines of the House.
  • Adaptation and Flexibility: While the internal adoption of a House currency may pose initial challenges for Clans, the long-term benefits outweigh the transitional hardships. This strategic move enhances the adaptability and flexibility of the House's economic structure, making it more resilient in the broader economic landscape.
The decision to introduce a House-specific currency reflects a forward-thinking approach, emphasizing long-term effectiveness in managing internal logistics. By having control over their currency, Houses can regulate and adapt their economic policies to suit the unique needs and goals of the House. This level of control facilitates more effective management of economic resources and investments. The use of a common currency within the House fosters a sense of intra-House unity. It aligns economic interests, streamlines financial transactions, and promotes a cohesive economic identity for the House.
