The Deeping
The Deeping is a massive, complex magical artifact, that looks a bit like a huge waterwheel (thus some people call it the Wheel). It sits astride the river, and in fact it made the river; before the Deeping, the base of the peninsula was mostly mushy swamp. The Hewellen made the Deeping, and maintain it. It is the basis of the centuries-old trade agreement between the Hewellen and Maveren. Barges going up and down the river pass through the Deeping as though it were a lock. Nothing happens to the ships in the process (say the Hewellen, anyway), but they have to pass through the Deeping because the Deeping has to straddle the river. Some people say they hear whispering as they pass through it, or have deeply realistic visions.
