In life, Mus was a fixer/finder for hire; he grew up on the streets, knew Malfa like the back of his hand, and had never been anywhere else. The very first time he went overseas to another city, somebody killed him from behind and dumped his body down a dry well. It turned out to be an ex-holy well, with just enough spiritual juice left that Mus didn't quite die all the way. Now he's managed to smuggle himself back into Malfa, determined to solve his own murder.
Also, coming back to Malfa has reunited him with his pet mouse Lemuel. He's pretty sure leaving Lucky Lem behind is why he got killed.
