Sea of Shifting Sands

The sands have never been kind to my people, but it is the only place that I have ever called my home. - Maruk Tribesman

Geography

The Sea of Shifting Sands are found in the inner regions of Jantani Desert were it is made up of vast dunes, various rock formations and plant life that is scattered about the region. Water can be found here well, mainly in oases scattered about it is various places.

Localized Phenomena

Sand Storms : High winds often carry sand at high speed that can lower visibility and make it difficult to breathe if inhaled. The possibility of flying debris being caught by the storm is also a concern.   Shifting Dune: Dunes often move when the wind constantly moves in various directions, which can make them unstable and swallow up anything in their path if not moved out of the way.   Quicksand: Unstable areas of sand can easily cause something that comes across to swallow them whole, and are often a sign of water nearby that creates them.

Climate

It is always hot during the day and freezing at night, with little to no seasonal variation.

Natural Resources

Oases: Pools of water are found scattered about the sands to allow for all the dwellers here to quench their thirst, so that the desert heat does not claim them.

History

Untamed Desert

The Sea of Shifting Sands is one of the few places in the Jantani Desert that has no significant presence of settlements or signs of civilization, unlike other parts of the East, leaving it relatively untamed by its native inhabitants. The only real sign of people is mainly the nomadic desert tribes, such as the Maruk people, who call this place home. However, they are always on the move and travel constantly, adapting to changing weather and terrain patterns to ensure their survival. Being a secretive people, they tend to leave no trace that they were ever there, and the constantly shifting sands ensure that they are always on the move. Traversing the sands can be a challenging task, as the sands are continually shifting due to the constant high winds in the area, and the sun's reflection off the sands makes it appear like the sea, minus the water.   There have been attempts to colonize this region, all of which have failed due to a lack of knowledge about the local weather patterns and constant raids by the Maruks for intruding on their territory. The most problematic aspect was finding a steady source of water, as expeditions often failed to return because they became lost in the dunes. One can easily become lost here, as geography can change suddenly with the appearance of local sandstorms, which can blind and disorient the senses. If the sand does not bury them, they will wander, unaware that they may be heading in the same direction that they just came from or the complete opposite. It's all the more reason to have a guide to aid in traversing such an unpredictable place, or never find your way out ever again.
