mountain lake

Beyond the northernmost of women's villages, a pass through the hills to the west leads to a large lake. Although none remember now, this is where the first women to settle along the river came from. That first village was more of a seasonal fishing camp, with no permanent population. People would come for fish when the river was high and return to the lake when it was low. The second such camp, an additional two days' walk distant, made for too long and too risky a journey back to the lake. Those who fished there stayed year-round, the first of what would become women's culture.

Climate

The weather at the lake's altitude is much rainier than the grasslands the nomads had left, with greater changes in temperature over the year.

Fauna & Flora

The lake's ecosystem contains many of the plants and animals that women are now familiar with. Three-berry was domesticated there.

History

The lake was originally settled by three nomadic groups who had lost their herds of stronghorn to a severe drought. The groups met and joined in an effort to find their deity and ask for relief from the endless hunger. A small group was sent ahead, and after several days discovered the lake just as the full moon rose. They believed the moon to be Old Old Mother herself and interpreted its appearance as her blessing for them to live there.   Contact between the lake villages and river villages dwindled. Some boy packs continued to visit the temporary camp until the first of the river villages was wiped out in a landslide. Unable to pass the debris in either direction, both the lake residents and river people assumed the others had all been killed.

View from the Future

The former nomads are ancestors not just of the women in the rest of the villages, but of everyone who lives on the vastland and ocean today.
