Blade Saints
While they are known by many names, the Blade Saint is a near universal concept across the world, and is a title applied to individuals that are loci of power and magic. Exemplars of martial prowess, where even one can turn the tide of any battle of normal soldiers.
The title of Blade Saint is applied separately from other titles they may accrue during their lifetime. Many of the knights of old were deemed Blade Saints, but they were not all deserving of the title. There is a not a standardized criteria for the title and is often applied ad hock by anyone who wishes for them to have it, for a variety of reasons. Even so, the general populace still uses the term as a stand in for "hero", even though there have been plenty of examples throughout history of Blade Saints that did nothing but harm.
Bel-Farnir the Red Leaf is a notable example of that idea, being a Blade Saint that has nary a heroic virtue attributed to him in all the the stories and accounts of him. Simply a soldier and raider that was skilled enough to be famous.
Sure, we're called Saints of the Blade, but as it turns out a Blade is not required. I've seen hammers, mauls, and even knuckle-dusters at one point. I'm sure that one day, there will be a Blade Saint that simply wields a hunk of Resonant Metal as their weapon...

No nation or power has ever applied the title to the whole of the martial force and retained respectability after the fact.
