The Voidborn
The Voidborn, sometimes called Aberrations, are creatures from the Void. They invade dreams, turning them dark. They are creatures of mythology and horror stories. They have no true form, made of smoke and shadows, no one can really truly glimpse at them. They can be as small as an insect or as large as you can conceive of. Tentacles, talons, multiple limbs and heads, if there’s a horrendous image you can conjure, they exist within the Voidborn. Voidborn can enter the fae realms, but Fae are unsure how it is done. Perhaps the barrier between the realms and the Void is simply weak and prone to tears. But they know the Voidborn can also enter with the help of Void magic or when the realms are imbalanced usually due to conflict.
Gaining power
Nightmares are their main source of power. This is the main reason they invade dreams, in hopes of turning them dark. Human nightmares, in particular, are very strong for the Voidborn. Conflict between the realms is a second way they gain power. Not only does conflict make nightmares more commonplace amongst the people affected by war, but when the balance of the four realms is not there, the Voidborn are able to break through to the fae realm easily. It is unclear if it simply weakens the fabric between the Void and the realms, or strengthens the Voidborn, but many suspect both.
Weaknesses
Good dreams are their primary weakness, especially those of humans. In turn those good dreams help feed the fae. Light is also a weakness of the Voidborn, and in many ways is the only way the Fae know to truly defeat the Voidborn. This means the Voidborn usually attack at night, because the light makes them weaker and easier to kill. It’s not uncommon for a Voidborn to attack during the day, but they’re easily killed. This makes those with the power to conjure light very useful against the Voidborn.
When attacked
An injury by claw, fang or weapon from a Void creature starts an infection within the fae. It steals their vitality, draining their magic ruthlessly, and once the magic is gone, so too is the fae itself. Healers may combat it, but the cost of the injuries is a hard struggle, as the Void wounds are not merely the wound, but also a nothingness, sucking up essence, hollowing out the one afflicted.
How to kill
They can be pierced, cut, and set aflame like any living creature. There are no weak spots known as each Voidborn is different in size and shape. So one must attack until the Voidborn is dead. They are easier to kill when they are bathed in bright light, like from the sun or magic, which weakens them.
Death
When a Voidborn dies, part of them dissipates away like smoke, while chunks of their flesh remain, as if those pieces were held together by the smoke. But the flesh is dangerous to touch and dissolves away in a few hours, making it difficult to study.
