The Blade of Night

The Blade of Night is a kodachi style shortsword forged by the legendary smith Wyreth. It was created as a memorial to Wyreth's fallen comrade and friend, Alaric Khiale, whose sacrifice defeated the Mage-Priest Dhaim Acales, ended the Bhanjax Offensive and ushered in the current Era.
The blade is approximately two feet long and made of a dark metal of indeterminate origins with a prominent Akkadian whorl pattern running along the blade that appears to reflect an image of a starry night sky across its length. The guard is minimal in size and presentation and resembles two crescent moons encircling the blade. The hilt is wrapped in a simple dark leather and extended to allow for a two-handed grip, which is odd for such a short blade. The pommel bears a single cat's-eye sapphire in a silver setting.
There are no records of the blade bearing any overtly magical properties, but it holds great historical and almost religious significance to many people. Amongst the most significant are the followers of Khiale, smiths of Wyreth's school and historians.

History

The blade was forged in the early years after the destruction of Phared in the aftermath of the Bhanjax Offensive. Historians roughly place its creation anywhere from five to thirty years after the end of the war but no one can say exactly when. It is known that Wyreth wandered for several years after the war, and studied with smiths across Tarsere before eventually settling in Cor Caroli (in what is now The Shiare. The blade was likely forged either just after he ensconced himself in the city, or just prior to it. It is considered the first of his legendary works.
After it was forged, it was presented to the remaining Preceptors of The Bladeknights to adorn Khiale's tomb in Glaston's Tor where it sat in high prominence for many years. At some point in the mid fifth century, after the disbanding of the Bladeknights and their public ostracisation, Khiale's tomb was raided by parties unknown and the sword was stolen. No one is certain on where it went.
There have been many theories as to what happened to the blade, ranging from thieves stealing the blade for a noble collector, to the Bladeknights themselves taking it with them when they went underground, to Khiale himself descending from the The Court Behind The Sun to claim it. To this day, none of the theories have been proven (or disproven) and the sword remains a mystery, and a memory.
