Aetheric Gas

Aetheric Gas is a rare, quasi-magical, lighter-than-air substance that is found on the Saraethan continent and is virtually non-existent on the others. It is primarily utilised by the gnomes of Zur-Ryk to power their airships and some of their more esoteric inventions.
The gas itself is odourless, tasteless and is generally harmless if inhaled, though it does cause anyone who inhales large quantities to speak in a high pitched squeaky voice for several minutes.
The gas is extremely volatile and does not react well to open flame. Exposure to the merest spark can cause an explosion of catastrophic consequences so great care is taken when handling it. There is a whole department of gnomic bureaucracy dedicated to ensuring the safe handling of the materials at all times.
The gas permeates the very rocks and soil of the Earthmotes and is inexplicably linked to their continued defiance of the laws of gravity. Many of the fauna of Saraetha have adapted to and utilise the gas as part of their locomotion. Most notable are the several species of rays that migrate between the Earthmotes and the Illyrian Lowlands.

Properties

Origin & Source

It is unknown if Aetheric gas existed prior to the cataclysm and upheaval caused by Dhamoc's Plague, but it is commonly associated alongside the creation of the Earthmotes. When the upheaval of the Northwestern part of Saraetha caused massive island sized chunks of land to levitate above the continent and not return immediately, people took notice.
