Imperial Legion
The Imperial Legion is the standing military of the Triarian Empire. It is a volunteer force comprised entirely of career soldiers who are trained to a professional level and generally serve for several decades before retiring. In fact, soldiers who serve for at least 20 years are promised a pension and a parcel of land in the Heartland upon their retirement.
In battle, the Legion makes heavy use of longbowmen and heavily armored horsemen. If a more direct approach is needed, field trebuchets may be deployed, and marksmen using black powder rifles may be used. For smaller skirmishes, the Legion may use soldiers clad in scale armor who wield large tower shields and medium-length straight swords. A Legionnaire's equipment is paid for half by the state, and half by deducting a small portion of a soldier's pay each month until the full cost has been recovered. A soldier is expected to keep his equipment in near-perfect condition, and has the right to retain all of it upon his retirement. In this way, the majority of the nation is made up of well-trained former soldiers ready and willing to, in theory, die for the Crown.
Legionnaires who excel far above their peers may be invited to join the Seers. This appointment is optional, but few turn down such an esteemed position.
