The Icewalkers

Overview

The group commonly referred to as the Icewalkers are a distinct non-native species currently residing on Yxil-7. They originate from the glacial world of Nith’kaa, where successive generations of biological engineering and natural adaptation have produced a physiology capable of surviving extreme cold.
The Icewalkers arrived on Yxil-7 as captives aboard a crashed slaver vessel. Following the crash, surviving slavers were executed by the indigenous tribe of the region. The liberated captives were absorbed temp

orarily into the local nomadic society but eventually separated to form an independent settlement.

Physiology and Adaptations

Icewalkers possess a highly specialised physiology suited for environments with low atmospheric pressure, subzero surface temperatures, and low light diffusion. Their skin is typically frost-blue or grey-white in tone, offering both thermal efficiency and environmental camouflage. Pigmentation in their fur and skin includes reflective particles that assist with thermoregulation.
They possess multi-lobed lungs designed for extracting oxygen from thin air, comparable to adaptations seen in high-altitude mammals on Earth. Their cardiovascular system maintains core warmth with a peripheral blood shunting mechanism, similar to those found in penguins and seals. These traits allow them to conserve heat efficiently without bulky insulation.
Their eyesight is adapted for low-contrast environments. Their eyes can detect polarised light and are hypersensitive to motion and subtle gradient shifts within snowfields and blizzards. This enables them to navigate during whiteouts or during periods of minimal light when visibility is otherwise near zero.
Covering parts of their bodies is an array of ornamental fur structures. These fur features are not purely decorative; they contain photosensitive chromatophores and fine-scale sensory hairs. These function similarly to mammalian whiskers, allowing for spatial awareness and subtle tactile input. The arrangement and colouration of these fur whorls also form a component of their unspoken communication system.

Communication

Icewalkers use a dual-mode communication system. Their primary spoken language relies on tonal variation and pitch cadence, developed for clarity in environments with strong wind or auditory interference. A secondary, non-verbal system incorporates subtle movement and hue changes in their sensory fur. This fur-based communication is used primarily among their own kind and is indecipherable to other species without extended cultural immersion.

Social Structure on Yxil-7

After the crash of the slaver vessel, the Icewalkers were taken in by a native nomadic tribe on Yxil-7. Although initially cooperative, the relationship between the two groups deteriorated due to differing worldviews. The native population, acclimatised over generations to their world’s hardships, chose to live within the bounds of Yxil-7’s natural cycles. In contrast, the Icewalkers viewed the planet as a site of exile and began searching for ways to leave.
Over time, the Icewalkers withdrew from the tribal settlements and established their own village in a remote subarctic valley. The site was chosen for its proximity to salvageable debris fields from the original wreck and its geothermal activity, which provides limited power and heat for their structures. The settlement is organised around a communal salvage and repair operation, with each family cell contributing to long-term objectives: ship restoration, offworld signalling, and resource harvesting.
Despite multiple attempts, the Icewalkers have been unable to repair their vessel or construct a viable replacement. Generations have now passed since the original crash, and while some individuals have adapted to Yxil-7 as a permanent home, many retain the goal of eventual departure. They remain culturally distinct from the native tribes and rarely participate in intergroup rituals, though trade and limited cooperation persist.

Technological Standing

The Icewalkers are not a post-scarcity or post-biological society. Their enhancements are entirely organic and heritable rather than machine-integrated. Technologies once used to manipulate their genome are no longer accessible to them, leaving only the enduring biological legacy of past advances. They are capable engineers and tacticians, especially in the fields of survival architecture, adaptive metallurgy, and acoustic signalling.
Their current technological efforts are focused on salvaging and adapting remnants of their crashed ship, mining local minerals for conductive materials, and synthesising replacement circuit components using indigenous biochemistry.
Cold-adapted and genetically engineered, the Icewalkers hail from the frozen world of Nith’kaa.
Stranded on Yxil-7 after the slaver ship they were captive on went down, they’ve broken from the local tribes and built a life on the ice by salvaging what tech they can, surviving on their own terms, and searching for a way off the planet that’s become their new prison.
