Eolyneth (AY-oh-lih-neth /ˈeɪ.oʊ.lɪ.nɛθ/)

Among the most mysterious and awe-inspiring entities known to wander in the galactic deep, the Eolyneth are vast, rarely glimpsed beings of celestial scale, known colloquially as space whales, star dragons, or Godspawn of the void. They are living creatures so rare that even the most seasoned voidfarers may never see one in a lifetime. Said to birth stars as an aftershock of their ancient mating rituals, their appearances often coincide with unexplained stellar events, gravitational anomalies, or inexplicable bursts of radiant sound.   What little is known of their existence has been painstakingly gathered from scattered sources over millennia. Eyewitness accounts, garbled sensor data, lost field notes, and many, many religious texts have been woven together to form a speculative record of their lifecycle. While no modern species can claim to truly understand them, enough consistency in the stories remains to chart what is believed to be the phases of an Eolyneth's life.   Though enormous and world-shaping in presence, most space-faring beings are incapable of seeing these creatures with the naked eye. Only those attuned to the deeper harmonics of nature can visually see them, should they be so lucky.   However, the calls of the Eolyneth are another mater: their haunting, resonant vocalisations ripple through nearby sapce, often mistaken for background radiation, corrupted signal noise, or hallucinations if the ship's technology isn't attuned precisely enough.   To those who recognise them, the sound is unforgettable. A vast, mournful cry felt more in the chest than in the ear.

Lifecycle of the Eolyneth

Compiled from fragmented records, deep-void oral accounts, and incomplete navigational telemetry.

I. The Newborn (Calf)

Said to be born alive, not hatched, the Eolyneth calf is already immense by most standards. Its body is semi-luminous, partially transparent, like a constellation in motion. Born in deep, uncharted sectors, these newborns are fiercely protected, rarely (if ever) observed. Some ancient navigators claim to have heard resonant hums in the black before falling unconscious. It's believed by some to be the proximity of a mother Eolyneth giving birth that causes such events.

II. The Wanderling (Juvenile)

These juveniles drift through the galactic tides with unpredictable purpose, leaving trails of magnetic anomalies and distorted starlight. Their bodies shimmer with embryonic light, often mistaken for comets or rogue celestial phenomena. Most accounts describe them as beautiful, haunting, and sometimes singing. A few reports claim entire crews were overcome with emotion or trance-like states after brief exposure to a Wanderling’s presence, though all such data is deeply contested.

III. The Cocooning (Metamorphosis)

After untold years, the juvenile is said to enter a dormant state, sealing itself in a stony chrysalis that drifts indistinguishably through the void. These cocoons resemble asteroids, impossible to detect without intimate familiarity with Eolyneth rhythms. Some believe adult Eolyneth act as wardens for the cocooning young, guarding them from threats. No confirmed sightings of such cocoons exist. However, several vanished expeditions left behind strange gravimetric recordings that suggest something vast moved silently behind them.

IV. The Dawning (Emergence)

When the Eolyneth emerges from its cocoon, the release of energy is titanic. Nearby matter may ignite into newborn stars; weak stellar remnants may collapse into black holes. This process, though shrouded in myth, is believed by many to be the source of the ancient legend: when the Eolyneth mates, a star is born. In truth, the celestial destruction and creation may simply be side effects of the colossal power involved in their metamorphosis, and, possibly, their mating rituals.

V. The Leviathan (Adult)

Now fully formed, the adult Eolyneth becomes a being of grace and immensity. It glides through space, unbound by system or law, seen only in fragments of reflection or fleeting silhouettes across nebulae. No reliable size measurement exists; stories vary from ship-sized to moon-scale. Their presence is said to warp gravity, silence comms, or alter perception. Some travellers report hearing “songs” in the static. Others experience visions or dreams after distant contact.

Interpretation Across the Stars

To some, the Eolyneth are gods, sculptors of the universe whose lifeblood seeded the stars. To others, they are natural titans, living relics of a forgotten age. Some religious sects believe they are the messengers of the void, while fringe scholars argue they are simply a rare form of cosmic megafauna, misunderstood due to their scale and infrequency. What unites all belief is awe: no one who has claimed to witness an Eolyneth - directly or indirectly - has ever described it as anything less than divine.
Though invisible to the eyes of most, a fair lucky few have heard the cosmic song of the Eolyneth out in the void of space.   Fewer still have laid eyes upon the creature.
