Whelthering
Transmission & Vectors
Whelthering is not contagious, but it may be caught through contaminated air.
Causes
The Miasma, when inhaled, brings about the effects of the Whelthering.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Whelthering include a fanatical craving for more of the Miasma, quick, violent anger, and fever. The condition may also lead an individual to self-destructive behaviors such as starving oneself and self-mutilation. The anger, fever, and self-mutilation symptoms ease once the afflicted inhales some more Miasma.
Treatment
Once struck with the Whelthering, an individual may be saved from his or her condition by slowly weening the afflicted off of the Miasma. Records show that once an individual is cured successfully, they rarely return to Miasma consumption.
Prognosis
Should the afflicted be left to their own devices in such a state, they may either become reckless and get themselves killed by some outside force or starve themselves to death.
Prevention
Unfortunately, the only way one may protect themselves from the Whelthering is by either never coming into contact with the Miasma, or by handling it carefully, and with the appropriate, government-sanctioned mouthpieces.
History
The first recorded outbreak of the Whelthering is an old Quaran text written by Quar-Khan Khaz's Chronicler Bartima, who explains in detail the religious explanation for the condition and the Miasma's existence. The outbreak occurred sometime before the end of the construction of Glimmer, and after the Skeleton was found.
Cultural Reception
The afflicted are viewed with pity, and are often brought to churches to undergo the appropriate recovery methods.
