Ecology and Habitats

The G'ecko do occasionally gather at their "native home" which they call "Egg-Home" in their language. This is a giant hollow stone in the shape of an egg, from which a river springs forth which flows to the Southern Sea. This is concidered the most sacred site of the G'ecko and every G'ecko's "native home." It is here that all of the tribes gather once or twice a year to participate in major religious festivals, engage in inter-tribal trade, commune with related tribes, and marry off members between tribes to build inter-tribal bonds.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The G'ecko are a tribal species. Each tribe consists of one large family of one or two sets of elders, around 6-10 adults, and 3-6 children of varying ages. This leads to an average tribal size of around 20 members, though they can vary both larger and smaller than this. G'ecko tribes never get above 30 members though as around this size they tend to fracture or marry off members to other tribes. Within each tribe of the G'ecko there is very little heirarchical structure. Tribes being predominantly families, the G'ecko have a very pragmatic and practical sense for authority. Each G'ecko is "in charge" whenever they personally excel at a particular task. For instance, the elders have the most experience and knowledge and thus are often in charge of navigation for the tribe and for maintaining cultural practices. When making camp for the night, whichever of the G'ecko adults that is deemed the "best" at organizing and setting up the tents, will be in charge of that. Another G'ecko will handle cooking, and another will lead a hunting team, and another a foraging team, one will keep watch over the children, etc. The G'ecko in general find the notion of nominal leaders, like those of the Canids to be a confusing and silly practice as "how can one person be the BEST at everything?"This mentality means that there is no concept amongst the G'ecko of a centralized "G'ecko nation/state" nor is there a singular authority amongst the G'ecko. Each tribe manages themselves and outside of cooperating to achieve specific short-term goals, the G'ecko rarely organize themselves beyond their personal tribe.

The G'ecko only have one distinct "class" within their society and that is the Shaman. G'ecko worship both nature spirits and their ancestors, and their shamans are a large part of this practice. G'ecko shamans, unlike more formal religious castes are not formally trained, and any G'ecko can become a shaman. Shamans do tend to recieve some training when visiting "Egg-Home" with their tribe. The G'ecko have a natural affinity for elemental magics, and many shamans exhibit the ability to naturally converse with nature spirits and elementals. This affinity for nature magic also contributes to their aptitude for their desert environment, and enables them to travel much further, in a shorter time-span, than their Canid neighbors could achieve.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

G'ecko names traditionally will end in ah consonant, this is the only instance of a syllabel ending in a consonant.

Beauty Ideals

The G'ecko consider a fat tail to be a representation of health and wealth. If you can afford to eat well enough to keep your tail fat, then you must be very well off. The G'ecko also use demonstrations of athletic or intellectual skill to improve their standing amongst their peers.

Gender Ideals

The G'ecko only have two genders. Their sexual desires are rigidly tied to reproduction and thus sexual attraction and matters of sex and gender really only become relevent to the G'ecko when the females begin to go into heat.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship amongst the G'ecko can be very complicated or very simple depending upon the tribe(s) involved and their specific customs. Courtship and marriage amongst the G'ecko is done with the goal of creating offspring, however due to the nature of G'ecko sexuality sexual attraction is not a factor for the desire for partnership amongst the G'ecko. Courship often begins with initial steps of building familiarity between the two individuals. This often results in finding common ground either a particular activity the both enjoy, or a particular skill they both share. Often times permission from the parents and/or elders of their tribes are consulted for permission. Some partnerships are political, agreed upon by both tribes, but these are rare and most often if they do occur, the pair involved likely are ok with the pairing.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The G'ecko speak a language they call "Ahkehdeh" which literally translates to "language."
