Ommium is a clear liquid, with nearly identical physical qualities to water. The only defining trait is a strong metallic odor.
Physical & Chemical Properties
When isolated, Ommium is a largely inert substance. However, when introduced to a source of fuel or transfer of energy, it dramatically increases the effects of that substance.
Geology & Geography
Ommium can only be obtained by harvesting and refining the embryonic fluid of Ommites in their pupate stage.
Life & Expiration
Once refined, Ommium has an indefinite shelf life, provided it is isolated from any energy it can copy.
History & Usage
History
Ommium has been an important compound from the onset of its discovery. Due to its unique properties, the Union immediately seized control of its main producer. When other corporations began producing it themselves, the Union heavily restricted its production and distribution. this led to a number of military conflicts, most notably the Prindari Civil War during UTP 9.
Discovery
Ommium was discovered during UTP 3 by Kawa-Zyroma Research in an attempt to improve the range and efficiency of hyperspace gates at the time. The introduction of Ommium accomplished both of these in a manner that was much more cost effective than any contemporary alternatives.
Everyday use
Ommium is primarily used as a fuel additive, to increase the strength and efficiency of the fuel. its other common use is to increase the power of firearms and other explosive devices.
Refinement
The refinement process involves harvesting the fluid from pupate Ommites, and distilling it through rounds of evaporation and filtration.
Hazards
The most prevalent danger Ommium poses is that it enhances any reaction, including thermal, chemical, or nuclear reactions. This can lead to catastrophic results in the event of a nuclear explosion or a widespread endothermic event.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Due to the restrictions placed on it, only two corporations are authorized to manufacture and distribute Ommium: KZR (now a subsidiary of Nanogen) and O&S.
Law & Regulation
The Union has strictly regulated the production and distribution of Ommium to those with a special permit, only granted by each galaxy's governing body. A loophole in the law, however, excludes Deadspace, leading to many criminal organizations starting their own production lines.
