Water Marble

Real blue marble can only be found under the sea. That's one of the things the Atlantean exploration fleet is hoping to find.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Water marble is a cold smooth blue rock, with dark blue veins running through it at random.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Water marble appears in large veins under the seabed, and can occasionally be seen when the upper sediment is worn away. The blue streaks are theorized to be copper sulphate stripes.

Reacts to acid and neutralizes it, like other types of marble

It is easy to carve as marble is not too hard a stone, and also takes luster easily.

Geology & Geography

It is found at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean.

Origin & Source

Water marble comes from compressed limestone that has been under pressure by sea and soil for millions of years.

History & Usage

History

This particular shade of blue marble didn't become a common sight until after 1841, when the first Atlantean exploration fleets returned with samples of blue marble.

Everyday use

Used as indoor tiling in wealthier homes or public government buildings in the Pits.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Said to be related to the lost civilization of Atlantis, as small sculptures, pottery, and even bricks made of this material have been salvaged off the sea bed.

These Atlantean items have been put up in Castover's capital museum as cultural heritage of the pirates' exploration missions.

Industrial Use

Water marble that is too chipped for building or sculpture is crushed into powder, then used as an acid-neutralizing agent.

Refinement

The marble has to be cut out from underground via mineholes dug in shores as close as possible to a vein. Aside from this, water marble can be processed like any other marble, even taking the same shining process.

Manufacturing & Products

Stone floors, wall tiles, and sculptures are some of the things that can be made with water marble.

Hazards

The dust produced from grinding water marble down may irritate lungs when inhaled. Masons prevent this by wearing cloth masks covering their noses and mouths.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Luxury traders deal with water marble as salvaged goods and antiques.

Storage

Water marble items should be stored flat and not shaken where possible. During transportation, said items are surrounded by insulation to keep them steady.

Law & Regulation

Among the pirates, only those who have traveled with the Atlantis exploration fleets at any time are supposed to be able to use this rock in sculpture; but in practice, most people in the Pits have at least one item made of this material.

There is no penalty to having water marble items without having gone on the Atlantis exploration fleets, as trade in the products is common among luxury dealers.
