Earth's Colonization Period was over a thousand years ago. Shinseikatsu, colonized during the mid-Colonization Period over 1100 years ago, has been a Lost Colony for almost that long - on purpose.

Now the Terran Confederacy - which formed out of the colony wars between Earth and her Known Colonies - is searching for the Lost Colonies, and the TC ship Marco Polo is headed towards Shinseikatsu. But the Chikyuu-jin of Shinseikatsu have had a war and hold secrets of their own, secrets that none of the Terrans are prepared for.

Meanwhile, the Chikyuu-jin have concerns of their own, involving interstellar politics and an escalating pirate threat on their inter-system and allied trade. The sudden appearance of the Terrans - and the uncertainty over their reasons for being there - might be all that is needed to light the spark to the tinderbox that is the Trade Alliance.
