The Crescent Mine
"Everyone lost on that venture. Lann lost wealth, Velnor lost esteem and the Kingdom lost a source of wealth."
Purpose / Function
Was intended to be a mineral and ore processing hub.
Design
Some claimed the Crescent mine was designed as one might imagine an Imperial Forge might have been constructed. Imagined since none but members of the Imperial Artisan's Guild ever entered. The Crescent Mine, like the forges was a large square building. The Mine had an large open courtyard for ventilation. The foundries would be located in such a way as to take advantage of this. There were areas to process all manner of minerals and ores.
Architecture
The main building was a large cut stone affair with a massive segmented central courtyard.
Defenses
Short, 2 meter high, wall with guard towards at each corner. A full time detachment of the Order of the Silver Crescent was slated to guard it when operations were begun
History
In 320 AF an exployer entered a crack located in the western edge of the Duchy of Lann. After several months he emerged. He went to the Duke with what he had discovered. In his pack he bore copper, iron and gold ore along with a pile of assorted raw gemstones. He had traveled far underground and began to encounter multiple caverns that were full of mineral wealth.
The Duke of Lann planned a large building complex designed to take advantage of this windfall. Word of this spread and soon a protest was lodged with the Knights Council by the Duke of Velnor who claimed the path traveled undergound led under his lands and therefor the wealth was his by right. The construction had already began and would continue for two years until Queen Aithea Reving ruled construction halted. The Duchy of Velnor could either dig down and find the caverns, which they did not want to do and would be prohibitive in terms of expense and effort. Or they could pay the Duchy of Lann to use their entrance. The Duke of Lann said he would allow it for half of what was removed via his land. No agreement was reached and the Queen ordered the entrance to the tunnels under the Crescent Mine to be filled in and never reopened until an agreement could be reached.
So for decades the almost completed structure has stood at the base of the mountains . The whole affair, including the wasted expense to build the Crescent Mine, led to increased tensions between Lann and Velnor.
