Career
Qualifications
Must have completed the Shadowguard training. It took a decade and the fail rate was, on average, almost eighty-nine percent. Every year thousands of boys and girls begun the training. By decades end maybe a few hundred survived and passed.
Career Progression
After training, a new Shadowguard was assigned to one of The Shadowguard Legions. Advancing in rank required leadership qualities, unquestionable loyalty and a mastery of all the skills of a Shadowguard. The Shadowguard Legions operated on the Imperial Legion model so the rank progression was Shadowguard, Squad Leader, File Leader, Century Captain, Legion Captain, General, Marshal
Payment & Reimbursement
Shadowguards received the standard legion wage. Unlike others in the service of The Empire, if a Shadowguard serves well and survives to retirement then in addition to the standard pension they also receive a large lump sum in gold and a small farm's worth of land anywhere in the empire or equivalent value in coin.
Other Benefits
The Shadowguard was the most feared and respected member of the Imperial Military. Their Skill, loyalty and battle prowess was unmatched.
Perception
Purpose
The Shadowguard Legions were the physical manifistation of the will of the Holder of the Imperial Throne. They were the last line of defense for the Royal Family. If the Ruler of The Empire wished to personally crush an enemy they sent the Shadowguard.
Social Status
Among the Imperial Military every rank from Shadowguard to Marshal was accorded the respect of one rank higher. i.e a standard Shadowguard counted as the same rank as a Squad Leader in any other formation.
History
The first Shadowguards were four warriors of Beldin commanded by a fomer Zwintar Captain called Bolderin. Since then they have served as the personal bodyguards of the Royal Family and the sword to be swung at the Thrones enemies.
