Salldir

Officially Salldir has a governor for each district, who all meet in council annually. Each one chooses an undergovernor, approved by the other governors, to assist in duties and step into the role when it becomes vacant. In reality, the city is managed by a small number of wealthy families who nominate these undergovernors, making sure their district is led by someone they know they can influence.

Salldir is too far from the volcanic highlands to benefit from Mraydor's robust steam energy plants. Their wealth comes from the port, the largest of any touching the Inside Sea. Their influence comes from being an essential middle stage between engineering production and export.

The most popular event in Salldir is the New Year's Festival. All cities on Mraydor celebrate the rising solstice in similar fashion, but the spectacle is at its best here. It begins a day early, with the excuse of celebrating the last day of the ending year as well as the first day of the new one. After nightfall, a system of powerful lamps and pumps create brilliant displays of glowing streams of water dancing against the dark sky.   Almost any day there is a celebration going on somewhere in the city. Individual districts and neighborhoods have their own histories and heroes, and a polite question asked of a transport-hire might get you a ride to an extravagantly decorated area holding its own parade for anything from the anniversary of its founding to the sighting of the year's first white-neck walkerbird.
