Grieg (/ɡriːg/)
Vitgrud's custom of temporary marriages, a measure intended to avoid inbreeding, makes it harder for any of its citizens to acquire a reputation as a player. Harder, but not impossible. Grieg succeeded in earning that dubious distinction not so much by pursuing a second marriage well in advance of the expiration of his first, but by failing to mention it to his spouse. It did not help his case any that the repercussions negatively affected negotiations with the Allied Isles.

Personal history
In the five years before a Trial of Life, it's common for members of the fivespan to experiment with romantic relationships. Grieg appeared to be an exception, forming an early and solid-seeming rapport with Davria. However, their relationship self-destructed just before the Trial was to begin. With unnatural speed Grieg turned his attention to Shemda during the Trial. Burdened with the responsibility of being the Dancinglight's heir, Shemda welcomed the companionship and chose him as marriage partner when the Trial ended. After the birth of their son Vanich, Grieg began inquiring among other couples, looking for someone who was willing to trade partners before the end of the next Trial. This practice is not in and of itself frowned upon, so long as all involved parties approve, which Shemda did not. In fury, she took advantage of an opportunity to leave Vitgrud for the Eddy, taking Vanich with her. As acting Dancinglight, Ard refused to entertain any Allied Isles ambassadors until the boy was returned.

Because his actions needlessly delayed Ralcondray's agreement with the Allied Isles, Grieg is not permitted to visit any of its member islands.

Grieg was more than a little arrogant about being one of the oldest members of his fivespan. Growing up, he took advantage of his age to throw his weight around. Once the Trial ended and he was no longer part of a fivespan, he found that older adults were not as easily impressed.
